I don't have an answer, but was wondering the same thing just a couple of days ago. On our 71' the trunk flys open very quickly when you turn the key. I looked at it and figured that I would get around to trying to adjust it sooner or later.
Surley someone here has adjusted these before???

Theres how the torque rods work. When both or either rods are in the highest position, the lid opens with the least amount of effort. However it closes with the most amount of effort. When they are in the lowest position more effort is used to raise the lid but less to close the lid.
The rods are not interchangable from side to side so dont remove them. You have to play around with the different positions of the torque rods in different slots to get the required effort you are looking for. The rod that goes in the adjustable slots on the left hand side control the torque on the right hand hinge. The rod that goes in the adjustable slots on the right hand side control the torque on the left hand hinge.
If the adjustable end of the rods point rearward the rods are installed wrong. The adjustable end should point to the firewall not the rear bumper.
