Below are two photos of a shade tree wiring job I'm trying to figure out. The first is of a "cut" purple wire that looks like it should go to the ignition switch and an "added" green wire that is connected to the ignition switch.

The second photo is of the other end of the green wire at its "splice" at the rear of the engine. :) Haven't had a chance to trace down the brown wire it's spliced to yet.

Questions are....What is the purple wire and where should it attach?

What purpose is the green wire serving? Is it an alternate to the cut purple?

I had considered replacing the entire wiring harness, but it actually looks pretty good except for a few things like this I have to figure out.

Can I guess?
Old cut purple - to neutral safety switch?
Green spliced into purple on it's way to the starter solenoid?

So.....you think they by-passed the neutral safety switch?

I guess that wire could have been purple at one time. In person, it looks more brown to my ole failing eyes.

The floor shifter is out of the car right now. I'll try to test the neutral safety switch tonight to see if it's bad.

Just checked the switch. Readings indicate it's working. Back-up light portion, too. Wonder why they did the by-pass? Oh well. The green wire is gonna be history and the cut purple is taking it's place on the ignition plug unless someone chimes in.
