OK, basecoat is on, and it came out nice...Temp tonite is supposed to go down to mid 30's...I dont know if I should do the clear coat tonite, it will have plenty of time to dry before it gets really cold...or should I wait till tomorrow...will be about 65, but of course not till later in the day...I know you shouldnt let the base coat sit too long without topcoating either...what would you guys do??? Johnny, wait till tomorrow. You need a bare minimum of 60 degrees for a few hours at the least for the clear to cure.

Depending on the type of base and hardner you used you may have to scuff the base to get the clear to adhere properly.

I missed the very important part that your base is already down. Read the tech sheet and see the "window" for application of the clear. What brand is it? Most bases DON'T want to be sanded! Most brands have about a 24 hour window, Sherwin Williams is 7 days, so the brand is very important.

I guess my hearing must be going, I thought they said 35, but its 55....I ran out of clear, but by a miracle, my friend about 2 miles away is using the same clear on his car...except he isnt ready for about a week yet...so I just got done, and it looks great...thanks for the replys, and it shouldnt get cold tonite at all, especially in the garage, so I dont expect any problems. Thanks again, John

That's exactly right Martin. Some base coats,(DuPont for one, and I think maybe Sherwin-Williams for another) will experience severe adhesion problems if sanded between coats. PPG has a window of overnight, I believe. My favorite, Spies Hecker has an indefinate window and can be sanded if necessary.

By the way, Urethane doesn't cure if the temp drops below 60 degree. 70 is better. 80 is ideal.
