Everytime anyone in the shop does a late model GM car we have a hell of a time with the welding. It seems like the darn metal has a grease coating the way the weld quality is so poor. I am talking MIG or STRSW.
Now, I thought it was the junk they put in between the panels on a pinch weld, a sealer, foam, what ever the heck it is they think is needed there. So I cleaned, and cleaned, still the funky welds.

I have even noticed it on brand new parts where you are welding two NEW parts together, the darn welds are popping and cracking like you are welding on rusty painted metal and it is SPOTLESSLY clean.

I have to assume it is some zinc coating, but all cars have a zinc coating now, Toyotas don't have a problem like this.

Do you guys have any ideas?

I may have the answer, someone on another forum gave me this link. GM has new metal! (http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/030916/cltu051_2.html)

Hmmm. Sounds like easy to form once; next to impossible to repair by reshaping dents/dings/creases?

Martin, Ive noticed this on the GM trucks as we dont get to many GM cars throu the shop since its Dodge country around here.

I read the link and the other two links posted on the truck site, but no where did it say HOW to properly weld the new steel.

Hopefully GM will have some sort of tech bullention saying what needs to be changed. But leave it to the idiots at GM that wont happen graemlins/thumbsup.gif  ...Eric

....the source of tomorrow's new "Dual" metal is in now in your kitchen cupboard. The "corn" cans are reprocessed using a ultra high molecular thermoblaster. Hence, the teflon coating inside the can is causing the spatter. ;)

(Ya know, it even sounds like it could be true! LOL) :D

(Ya know, it even sounds like it could be true! LOL) :D Kewl, does that mean dirt, salt, rust won't stick to my truck? Gives a new meaning to "a hood so hot you could fry an egg on it" :D
