: Anyone heard of this product or use it
sevt_chevelle Sep 14th, 02, 1:06 PM Anyone use this new filler made by 3M called ZEBRA? Evercoat also has a product out that is the same stuff called Z-Grip. The PPG rep was talking about this stuff and didnt get much out of him as he had to leave. But any way it Zinc enhanced for rust resistance. Wondering if anyone has used it or knows more about it?...Eric
MARTINSR Sep 14th, 02, 8:58 PM I don't know about better rust resistance but it will adhere to galvanized metal where the older fillers don't. Cars made for the last couple of decades have a thin galvanized coating on all body panels. If you sand the paint off a late model car and then keep sanding you will see the metal change color, that is you paper cutting through the galvanizing (which is Zinc).
If you want a waterproof filler Evercoats Kitty hair, Tigar hair and Metal to Metal all are.

WayneK Sep 15th, 02, 3:44 PM Kitty hair good stuff. use it on all welded joints. Remove 95% B-4 frist coat of rough filler, but like the fact all minute voids are filled with a water proof product.
Tiger Hair good ,but is tought to work with. Now Gorilla Hair,That's A Real Man's
Water Proof Filler or should I say Slime ?

shannon Sep 15th, 02, 8:32 PM I'm gonna have to dissapoint you fellas....but neither Kitty Hair or the metal-2-metal products are water proof. I realize that the product information says they are, but I'll call their bluffs as well.
The fact is...both of those types of products still use TALC as one of the main ingredients.....if not THE main ingredient. Talc aint waterproof.
Use either product over bare metal to fill holes and rustouts without some type of protection to the metal first (ie, applying epoxy primer to the metal first) or protecting the backside from the elements, and it will fail.
If they are waterproof.....how come when you prep the repair with solvent cleaner before priming, you have to let the solvent evaportate out of the filler or blow it dry with compressed air?......CUZ it ABSORBS.....TALC absorbs.
As for the Zebra and Z-grip....dont know about the Zebra but the Z-grip is and excellent product. Sands superb and does contain the ZNX7, which does help adhesion to the galvanized. Get some Z-Grip and try it...you'll like it. Then, after that, get some Rage Gold...another Evercoat product, only 2 steps above the Z-Grip. The Gold is an honest to God miracle to sand. It also contains the ZNX7, but does not get the skin coat that most fillers get as they dry. The Gold is a bit more pricey than the Z-Grip, but EVERYONE who tries it admits its worth the extra money. The Z-Grip is a great bang for the buck....it costs about the same as most common fillers.
The Gold is super creamy, and tends to have a self-leveling feature as well. One thing I noticed about the Z-Grip is its inconsistency.....one gallong will be nice and creamy, the next is like spreading crunchy peanut butter over hard brittle bread.
Alot of body men I know absolutely dont use any polyester glazing putty since switching to Rage Gold.

MARTINSR Sep 15th, 02, 10:51 PM Shannon, I just checked the MSDS on Kitty and Tiger hair and you are very right, both have Talc. In fact, they have exactly the same as the other fillers including RAGE.
Now, it makes sense that the talc would absorb moisture. I am going to call Evercoat and see what the tech dept says. I have had testimony of these two products working miracles, and with the claim on the can of being waterproof, I have to believe there is more to it than this.
But as a wise man once said "Without questions one can not have certainty"

MARTINSR Sep 16th, 02, 8:06 PM Shannon, in the words of Ed McMann "You are right sir". I talked with a tech at Evercoat today. They do have talc and they are NOT waterproof, unless of course they are coated with primer and paint!! Heck a sponge is waterproof then! http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif Marketing, they run the world. So, they are a little less absorbant, but not waterproof.
So lets put it into perspective. If you use one of these products as a base and finishing it off in your "regualar" filler you will be a step ahead if you had not used it. But it is not some magical product.
Thanks Shannon for pointing that out.

drptop70ss Sep 16th, 02, 8:18 PM So now that that bubble is burst, what is the best filler to use first over welded seams?

Never forget Earnhardt!
MARTINSR Sep 16th, 02, 9:43 PM I feel that if you have welded the seam thoroughly and the metal has been cleaned well, it really doesn't matter. But, if you want to "go the extra mile", the metal to metal or Everglass would be my choice. Of course there are other brands that would work as well.

sevt_chevelle Sep 16th, 02, 10:58 PM Agree with Martin that metal to metal on a welded joint would be best. You might not have got the seam fully welded, there might be that slight pinhole. Ive yet to find a "water proof" filler. Metal to metal is a water resist filler not water proof, meaning its better at resisting water then the regular filler but its not going to stop it.
But metal to metal sands like a bitch and hard to feather out so I only use it for a base filler not the top coat. I always top coat metal to metal with Rage made by evercoat or with some poly putty, I use dolphin glaze made by Upol.
Also I looked more into this Z-Grip and from what Ive seen they both have the same type of chemicials used for adhesion and such like ZNX7. It seems to me that both are pretty much the same product, anyway its tough to beat Rage or Rage Gold. Ill gladly spend that extra two bucks it costs for a product that performs...Eric
