: Interesting POR15 Problem

I painted my manifolds with the POR15 Manifold gray paint when I did the motor swap. Look fabulous, don't burn off, etc.

However, the honeymoon just ended. When cleaning out the engine compartment of the daily grime, the manifolds were luke warm. Cold water caused the paint to flake right off! I actually hit these with a hammer one night and didn't mar them. Now water takes it off?

Anybody else ever see this?

We painted the headers on our Monte Carlo with that stuff. Brand new Hedman headers right out of the box, had them sandblasted then sprayed the paint the same day. Looked great until we fired the engine and watched the paint come off in some spots. I was totally PO'D and called to complain. They would NOT refund my money but this is what they did do. They told me that there must have been fingerprints on the headers and that caused the paint not to stick and sent me another can of paint. That was four years ago, the can of paint is still unopened.I replaced the headers with another set of coated headers. When I bought the paint I asked specific instructions so no mistakes would be made, nothing was said about washing the pipes down with any cleaners, and yes, I did ask that very question when I bought the paint.

Tom,

Fingerprints, hmmm. I had them stripped, then I did the normal POR cleaning and metal prep steps before painting them.

Like I said, all was great and they looked perfect until I cleaned out the compartment and hit them with the water.

I'll be calling tech support on Monday just for fun.

I had mine powdercoated. But the rust has come right back through the powdercoating.
This is the first I've heard about a Por product giving problems. Usually, when other Por products fail, it's because the application instructions weren't followed. That's not to say you guys didn't follow instructions to the letter. What I'm wondering is, does Por try to sell other products that aren't quite as good as their rust preventative products by banking on their reputation? Follow up on this David, and let us know what tech support people has to say. I may buying manifold paints from Eastwood if this particular Por product doesn't work as advertised.

I had a similar problems covering my sway bar the other day,not heat related though. It was a new one from PST.I sanded it with 80 grit then wiped it down with marine clean.I coated it with the silver then then next day with black.A day later i came back and started to sand it a little to get some of the little bubbles off, then all of it started peeling off.I guess it was still too smooth for it to stick to it.Its now sitting out in the rain to get a little rust on it.Hopefully that will help.I know the surface has to be real clean and also have a little surface texture to it.

I also used the black on my suspension pieces those same nights so i checked them out and they were fine,i even tried to scratch it off.But they were also cast iron parts so they had alot of texture to them.

SS396 2000, the reason the Por stuck to the cast iron is because the cast is rougher and has a toothier surface for the Por to grip. Any time you use Por on steel that has been sanded smooth, you have to etch with Metal Ready. Otherwise, it will peel right off as you described. I coated my front inner fenderwells with Por 15 and the finish is still rock hard. I sanded them down to bare metal, cleaned them with Zeps's Citrus All Purpose Cleaner that I bought from Home Depot, and used Metal Ready as instructed. They look great!! On cast iron though, about all you need to do is brush off the loose rust with a wire brush and apply the coating.

Randy,"But they were also cast iron parts so they had alot of texture to them." Thanks anyway http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif The only thing i didn't use on the sway bar was the metal ready.I was just lazy and i paid for it. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif
