It will be awhile before I am ready to paint but I would like to seal all of the little paint chips and dings in the meantime. what grit paper should I use to clean off the surface rust and can I use a self etching primer?

i would try 2000 grit, then use one of those primer pens then touch it up with the color of you car, then sand it flat with 2000 again then polish with some compound. Not a perfect fix but it will look ok when you done.
