: Primer going on a little thick

I've sprayed (Binks #7 copy, siphon feed)K-36 primer before with no problems, but today, perfect weather, shaded in the garage, it was going on thick, causing a pebbled surface on the first coat. I mixed 3 oz. of hardener to 15 oz. of primer (5:1 ratio) but does this happen to anyone else? I'll sand lightly before the next coat, but maybe someone can tell me what could be the problem?
Thanks,
Rich

It's been awhile since I've used K36 but if I remember correctly the mix ratio was always 5-1-1DT reducer, check the ppg tech sheet to be sure. Bob

K36 has two mix ratios depending on the film build you desire. A high build is 5:1 where the normal build is 5:1:1.

I prefer the high build myself but the potlife is only 30mins so I add 1/2 Dt reducer. I like to add 1/2 reducer as it extends the potlife but still retains a high film build.

Also be a good idea to use a gun that has a tip size somewhere in 1.4 to 1.7. That Binks could just have to big of a tip/nozzle and basically just dumping on the primer

Sounds like the vent hole may have been plugged?

If everything else is the same, that may have been the problem.

No, it wasn't a clogged air vent, I learned to keep that open by making that mistake before.
The suggestion of using reducer was good for my situation. I read the product sheet and followed the insructions for a 5:1:1 ratio and it worked fine. Of course then I noticed water bubbles on the surface! Even though I was using an in-line water seperator, I guess it's time to drain the compressor. I sanded the bubbles out and resprayed. I'll say this, that K-36 is expensive! cost me about $111 for two quarts and I probably should have gotten the gallon b/c it's almost gone and I'll be needing more for the hood, quarter panel and probably another coat overall.
another thing-I had a temporary bout with insanity and thought I might just apply the color myself. Fortunately, the episode passsed and I'm feeling better now. I'll be making some phone calls tommorrow.
Thanks for the help,
Rich
