does anyone know of a place in southern california where they can acid dip frames and then galvanize to prevent new rust?

No, but I found this on galvanizing, Herb can probably tell you where to find one.

Just got mine back from the galvanizer and I was so proud of how it turned out. I have learned alot from Herb's threads. You will not by no mean regret this procedure. I will try to post the pics of my frame I just picked up Monday.

have they talked to you about warpage issues when being dipped in the galvanize tank? my shop quoted me 39 cents a pound to galvanize. i'm just worried about warpage.

I was thinking about doing mine also but i havent looked into the cost. How much to dip and how much to galvanize (per pound of metal put on or per pound of frame weight)?

Thanks

Different galvanizers have different prices. Could range anywhere from $150 to $250 according to some of the post I have read. I dont think galvenizing adds a conciderable amount of weight. You may be looking at maybe 10 to 15 max. I would trade the weight for the protection any day. Do a search on galvanizing, or read some of Herb's post. Herb has brought an abundance of information to this site on galvanizing.

When i was refering to weight, i was wanting to know whether they charged by the pound of frame put into the tank, or whether they calculated how much metal they applied and charged you for that.

Thanks

68-454, that looks awesome! Do you leave as is or paint over, I was unaware that process existed unless it was for a new car.

Yes, they charge by the pound. Meaning your frame and what ever else you might want galvanized

67T56Elky, Thanks for the comments. I plan on putting a primer base down first from Anchor paint. After primer Im going with the GM chasis black. Want it to look stock as possible. Thanks again.

is it possible to clear a galvanized frame? I think it would look kind of cool to clear it, and just leave it all shiny :)

Might give it a go on my sprint if it's doable.

That does look great. What is the texture like? Will you be able to tell it's been galvanized after it's painted?

Not really. Everything black is galvanized.

I have one concern about galvanizing my frame. I noticed alot of rust chips inside the boxed section of my vert frame, the size of potato chips. Obviously this has weakend the frame some. Is there a way to tell if the rails are too weak for the heat involved with galvanizing?

Thanks,

Conno

I guess all you can do is flip the frame over and measure it for warpage or sagging.

1badss396,

That diagram you've got there is a godsend! I used it quite extensively when I put a new rear section on my vert frame. The hardest part was getting at the factory welds under the boxed portion where the rails and the rear are connected.
