: New bests..
69-CHVL Sep 22nd, 06, 9:46 PM Well, hit the strip again looking for that elusive 12 sec timeslip. Once again, the 12's won't let me in  .
3 runs:
2.15/13.16/106.60 - best ever ET
2.03/13.28/106.76
2.00/13.24/105.64 - best ever '60 (advanced timing to 38* and lost mph)
I heated up the DR's like I hated 'em, and the car bit...enough to cause a minor bog. Had to put the silver spring.
What I don't understand is that I got the best et w/the worst '60..what's up with that?
Secondly, and more importantly. I'm down about a mph from a best of 107+. I put an RPM intake, ti retainers, and 26" dr's vs the 28" street tires. I though for sure the 26" tires would give me more rpm.
But, I had dropped by secondary jetting to 80's from 84's. I had a leaking fuel line that I thought is what made me need the 84's. That was 9 sizes up from stock...thought that was a problem.
Guess it really wanted the 84's?
RatONaStick Sep 22nd, 06, 9:57 PM Vince
How's it going??
What were the 1/8th mile times and mph??
Refresh my memory, what carb and does it have a secondary power valve??
I'm running #80 jets in the back WITH a secondary power valve in my 3310-1. That's the equivalent of a 88-90 jet.
69-CHVL Sep 22nd, 06, 10:04 PM Hi Brandon..going pretty good.
1/8 miles et's were 8.51 to 8.56, mph 82.82 to 84.19. My best 1/8 on the 107 run was 8.8/85.93.
Carb is 770 Avenger 74/80 . Stock was 72/75. Best run was 72/84. No rear PV.
RatONaStick Sep 22nd, 06, 10:13 PM Nothing seems to out of wack as far as incrementals go, at least by my limited experience.
I do think it needs more jet in the back.
What kind/size air filter are you using? I ask because my car gained .2 and 5mph in the eighth alone by removing the air filter(drop base with 3" tall k&n).
69-CHVL Sep 22nd, 06, 10:15 PM Just a cheap 14" x 3" drop base deal...always been there.
RatONaStick Sep 22nd, 06, 10:24 PM Next time you're at the track, make a pass and then remove the air cleaner on the next run.
Or buy one of those k&n filter lids.
On my car I have to use a drop base air cleaner because of hood height issues. Unfortunately the drop base air cleaner puts the bottom side of the lid really close to the top of the carb. From my experience this really hurts air flow into the carb.
69ssmike Sep 22nd, 06, 10:35 PM I went .2 to .3 faster removing the air cleaner, also clearance issues with the Dominator manifold. I picked up another .7 using the Hoosier Quick Times.
GRN69CHV Sep 22nd, 06, 10:38 PM So, I am assuming you tried the right heel brake forefoot the throttle, left foot on the clutch burn out technique?
69-CHVL Sep 22nd, 06, 10:52 PM Joe, I tried that and stalled the car  . I dropped the clutch and grabbed the brake real quick with my left foot..worked great - almost too good ( I did really long, professional burnouts)
You guys have a valid point w/the air cleaner lid. I measured it one time and it only sits about 1/2 above the choke tower. I'll either get the k&n lid or an HP carb. The carb will at least let me keep the original looking lid.
69-CHVL Sep 22nd, 06, 10:53 PM But, this is the same lid as my best MPH had...
RatONaStick Sep 22nd, 06, 11:04 PM Vince
Just try it, you may be pleasantly surprised to find out this might be enough to get you into the 12's. If not, it didn't cost a dime.
My first run with the air cleaner netted me a 8.4989 at 80.78mph. Second run without air cleaner was 8.28 at 84.73mph. The last run I upped the launch rpm to 4200, spun real bad and got a 8.29 at 85.69mph. After that last run I was booted for no helmet.
If you do the math, (1/8th et x 1.56) the first run was a 13.26 or so. the last two runs without the air cleaner were in the 12.90's.
69-CHVL Sep 22nd, 06, 11:17 PM Pretty substantial gain...I'll try it.
I wanted to change jets at the track but I forgot to bring a towel...plus that motor was HOT!!
Bob West Sep 22nd, 06, 11:44 PM How long between passes? First pass off the trailer is always quickest for my car too, then it will slow down .03-.04 and pretty much run the number unless we get an extensive cool down for an oil down or something. I picked up .2 removing the air cleaner with a paper element. I'm lucky if I gain .02 removing the air cleaner now, 14x5 K&N with a K&N top.
RatONaStick Sep 22nd, 06, 11:47 PM I feel ya on the heat. Makes me nervous dumping fuel over a hot engine.
A tip I read on here is to take a 20oz soda bottle or can and cut the bottom off. Remove one of the bottom bowl screws and drain it into the cup you made. Works pretty good.
You definitely should step back up to the 84's in the back. I honestly think it might like more, like I said I'm running the equivalent of 88-90's in mine. I might be a bit rich, but you lose more et/hp being too lean than too rich.
I've been meaning to get the car back to the track. I kinda got side tracked, bought a boat this spring and been doing lots of fishing. I did manage to get a good deal on a 4779 dp, we'll see how that works out.
jakeshoe Sep 23rd, 06, 1:22 AM You have more than enough MPH to get into the 12's. My Chevelle ran 1.9 60', 8.25 1/8th at 85 mph, and 12.94 in the 1/4 at 105 mph with a very mild 427, $99 summit converter, and 3.73's on 26" ET Drag slicks.
You first of all need to get the car to hook better, your 60' is killing your ET.
You will probably then need a looser converter, it ET'd best with a bad 60 because once it hooked, the engine rpm was up.
I've experienced the same thing, which told me a I needed a better converter.
I bought a $400 converter and it slowed the car down because it was too loose, 1000 rpm looser than I requested, and no break on a re-stall.
You want to know what converter NOT to buy, PM me.

Vince's ride is a 4 speed car with 3.31 gears.
I agree that if he were to lower his 60ft his ETs would drop, unfortunately it's going to be real tough to 60ft much better than he is with the 3.31 gears and a stick.
mr 4 speed Sep 23rd, 06, 6:22 AM Vince, congrats on the new best
bracketchev1221 Sep 23rd, 06, 7:03 AM Vince, I would not be alarmed about losing mph. Speed is a function of traction. Like was said before if you spin the hell out of the tires, the engine will not lug down and the engine will be higher in the powerband and cause a higher speed. When the car does bite, the engine will lug down and lose speed. However when it bites there is no wasted movement, so your 60' time will go down. If I lose .02 in 60' from tire slip I will usually gain 1 mph.
69-CHVL Sep 23rd, 06, 7:09 AM My times posted are out of order, should of been 13.2/106.76, 13.1/106.6, and 13.2/105.64.
There was a 1/2 hr between 1st and 2nd run, and hour between the 2-3rd run.
The temp outside was 59*, wheras my best mph nite was 37* - that may be the diff right there. But again, thought I'd gain some MPH w/the shorter tire.
I could tell by the time I got in 4th and ran through the traps the car would like a little more gear. But it is a street car, It was killing me trying to keep up w/traffic even with the 3.31's
69-CHVL Sep 23rd, 06, 7:12 AM Ray..makes sense. First tim even I got the car to slightly bog off the line. Heavier spring fixed that though.
I really should made the effort to put the jets in the back. After the 3rd run the rear started to protest, so that was enough.
cmt454 Sep 23rd, 06, 7:26 AM Congrats on the new bests! When I run my car at the strip, I always take off the air cleaner. The first time I tried it, I picked up almost 2 mph.
69-CHVL Sep 23rd, 06, 7:28 AM You guys are gonna make me go back and ditch that air cleaner!!!!
A new best is still a new best! :beers:
Driving the stick is not the easiest thing at the track, especially if you are looking for 12's. Your 1/8th MPH and your 1/4 MPH indicate a decent pull on the second half. Could be a bit more there IMO. How are you shifting skills? It is real easy to lose a few tenths unless you are really banging gears.
383Malibu Sep 23rd, 06, 8:27 AM ...What I don't understand is that I got the best et w/the worst '60..what's up with that?...Vince - That's not at all uncommon with a clutch car. Frequently, if the car hooks better, it keeps the rpm down and the motor bogs a little. Even if the bog isn't real noticeable, it may just drop out of the power band enough to make a difference.
69-CHVL Sep 23rd, 06, 9:17 AM I'd like to think I shift pretty goood. I shift pretty d@mn quick, chirping all the gears. Only let off the throttle a litte - no full powershifts here. Dont think the 36 yr old trans would be up to the task. I would like to go the TKO route over the winter. When I get that in, I feel more comfortable being "abusive" :D
69bu Sep 24th, 06, 2:27 PM Congrats Vince. Your shifting sounded fine too me. I coudn't muster any better than a 13.70 last night. Most of that was due to poor 60' times. I even tried the white spring but I think it was a little too loose as it slowed me down and bogged me off of the line a little. I would definitely try a run without an air cleaner. I think I picked up a couple of mph from that alone. That would maybe put you into those elusive 12's.
69-CHVL Sep 24th, 06, 2:51 PM Rich...I'm gonna head back down by the end of October or November before the track shuts down. Hope to see ya there.
I go back down there w/84 rear jets and see what happens. Then I'm going to perform the discus w/my airclear lid.
69-CHVL Sep 24th, 06, 3:08 PM Brandon, what kind of '60s are you pulling?
mr 4 speed Sep 24th, 06, 3:16 PM Vince,change your signature! :)
IMHO and experience, running low 13's banging a stick with 3.31's is pretty impressive..you aren't far from the 12's my friend...don't overthink it.
RatONaStick Sep 24th, 06, 3:34 PM Vince
1.96 on the first run, 1.879 on the second and 1.957 on the last.
I'm running 26x10 slicks and still spinning. Even on the second run with the 1.879 it spun a few revolutions, I also hit the rev limiter at the top of first and it spun when I hit second.
Keep in mind though that my car may be slightly lighter than yours, and I'm running a 2.43 first trans with 3.90 gears. I'm also launching off a two step.
jakeshoe Sep 24th, 06, 3:43 PM Ya,
I missed the 4 speed part. Bringing the revs up may help, but you don't have the torque multiplication of a converter, so deeper gears may be necessary to get much better, and the manual trans is also why your MPH is a bit high for your ET compared to what I'm used to seeing.
I would add my best times were with the air cleaner lid and filter removed and the base on, it was over a .1 difference in the 1/8th but I don't remember the exact times. It was bigger than I expected. I'm using a stock GM drop base setup which is lower than the aftermarket drop base stuff.
