Im thinking of painting my car myself, I read a few posts back that the best paint gun is a sata 2000, what else do i need? I have never painted before, i dont know anything about it, any help will be greatly appreciated., I want to use the PPG products everyone talks about on this site, DP40, K200 etc.. the only way to use these products i think is with a spray gun? does it come in an aerosol can?

Frank what I suggest to you being a first timer is go to your local shop and see if they will show you the ropes of painting. Painting a car is not easy to do especially for the first timer. Seeing done in person will be alot better then reading how to do it. Dont get me wrong read about painting as much as you can but like they say nothing beats hands on.
I do body work for a living, I dont do any painting just metal work but I do have to say that the sata 2000 is one of the best guns out there. My personal gun at home is a 2000, I really dont think you will find a better gun. Just keep this in mind dont spray primers through the same gun as base and clear. It can be done but it seems to take a toll on guns and plus primer and clears need different nozzle sizes to achieve the proper film build.
I use Shermen Williams paint at work, nice line of paint but use PPG on my own stuff. As for DP40 or any other type of expoy based product DONT use on bare metal. Expoy on bare metal is out to lunch. What you need is a self etching primer on bare metal like dx1791. A etch primer has so much better corrosion resistance then an expoy, plus its cheaper. Even PPG no longer recommends the use of expoy over bare metal and also the car manufactors. If you want to have the car retain its warranty you must use a self etching primer over bare metal.
As for your primer surfacers you just cant beat K36 or K38, Ive never used k200. Yes these prodcuts can only be used through a spray gun.
One other thing is make sure your air compressor is able to handle your paint gun, bads things can happen if you dont have the right amount of air supply to it...Eric

eric, thanks alot for the response, do you need two guns or can you change tips? I only want to set up the car with primer for now, if i use a good primer from a can, can a urethane primer be sprayed over what i did? will that effect the look of the paint?
thanks frank

Frank, one thing you have to do is be sure you have the compressor to back up that gun. The SATA needs about 15 CONSTANT CFM as I remember. If your compressor can't keep up with it, that beautiful gun will do no better than a $40.00 Knock off copy from Harbor Frieght.

Frank coming from the hobbiest point of view, you can have only gun for primer and clear, but in the professional world that is just a bad idea. The sata's dont change tips you need to buy different guns, but I think that there are guns made that can change to suit your needs. If I was to buy one tip size it would be 1.4.
As for spray bombs you are wasting your time. There is no such thing as a good primer in a can when it comes to spray bombs. Just save yourself the hassle and buy some etch primer, probbly be the same cost by the time you buy all those cans. Urethane can be applied over it... will it effect the look of the finished paint YES.
Just remember this one thing proper paint prep is 95% of a paint job. Without great prep your car will look like crap even if the final paint is killer...Eric
