: 496 first pass - awesome!

Made my first pass last night on the 496 I just built. I was worried about a super lame baseline run, but it exceeded my expectations by a long shot! Ran 11.51 at 117 with a 1.68 60'. Now I just hope that it's got that 2 - 5 tenths left to tune out of the ET. Following is my combo:
69 chevelle
496 (eagle kit with approx. 9.8:1 CR)
Dart Pro 1 310 cc rectangles
Lunati Voodoo 60232 (Thanks, UD Harold!)
Holley Strip Dominator single plane
Holley 850 dp
2" Hooker Super Comps
3" mandrel pipes with Dynomax Super Hemi Turbo mufflers
TH400, 10" TCI streetfighter (3600)
3.73's
MT ET Drag Radial 275/60

Those drag radials are incredible. No tire spin as far as I could tell. Not sure the link will work here, but there is a photo from this pass is at:

I got a lot of useful information from you all on this site while building this motor -- thank you.

Awesome! 117mph is flying. How are you liking those mufflers, are they still super quiet with 3" exhaust and 496ci? I am going to put them behind my 454HO I am installing. Thanks

nice pass uncle jack! what kind of pistons are you using in that combo?I built a 496 this summer with eagle crank and rods and KB hyper pistons, but it failed after 40 min. The rebuild is currently under way, hope to be done next week. I run 275/50 MT radials and they kook up my BBC truck very well. I am totally pleased with their performance.

I've had both 2.5" and 3" exhaust. Full tailpipes, turn downs before axles and different mufflers. Loud is a relative term, but I've decided that 3" pipes are loud no matter what you do. My car currently has 3" full length with tailpipes. I love the dynomax mufflers. I used to have 3 chamber flows on the same car and my God they were loud -- especially the interior noise. I changed to the Dynomax and the car ran exact same ET and mph (I made these changes when I had the 396 in it still). I like the Dynomax sound -- it's old-school. Much deeper and fatter tone. The flows sound racier, for sure. WHen you open up the throttle even the Dynomax's get pretty loud. I like the sleeper vibe. At the track last night, my buddies couldn't believe how tame my 496 sounded considering the ET. Perfect.

Cool!!! My maiden voyage with the 505 netted me a 1.57-4.60-7.18@94.91-9.44@108-11.34@118. Tuning, tweaking, better heads and converter have produced the 1.41-10.48@124 with hopefully a 10.3x in the near future.

I run 3" Dynomax Race Magnums with an X and same story as uncle jack, tame until you open it up. Funny how something that sounds badass on the street gets alot quieter at the track around all the open header pro cars.

85shorty496, I run SRP forgings in my 496. I've run KB pistons in other motors and never had any problems. Sorry to hear you had issues.

Bob West,
2 questions:
- what converter do you run?
- what carb do you run?

the Srp's are what I'll probably go with if the re-rebuild doesn't go well. They're lighter than the KBs so it'll make the balancing easier. What is the part # on those. 9.8-1 is right about where i want to be. also how do you like you 850 dp holley? I've got a 750 edelbrock that i doubt will cut the mustard when i get up and running.is it a reg holley or one of those new HPs?

8" ATI MRT converter, tightest 8" converter they make per Charlie Plott.

950HP just as it came outta the box, 78 jets up front and blocked the rear PV and jetted up from 78's to 86's. I borrowed John Wilsons 1000HP last fall and picked up .04 by just bolting it on, no tuning with his carb however. Still using the Performer RPM intake also with a 1" open spacer and the 3/4" NX Hitman plus nitrous plate.

Best run on 100hp shot of nitrous 1.47-6.49@106, n/a 1.41-6.65@101.9.
The 10.48 pass was 6.71 at the 1/8th mile mark.

Being a first time out its not a bad outing. whats the wt. of the car?
You should get that mph up over 120 pretty easy. You can get the Proform 950 body on it which would help. Ditch the streetfighter, a good quality converter will get you 3mph easy. Whats the duration on the cam? if its 232 then for such a mild cam youre doing well. You should end up with a high 10sec ride pretty easy with some time tuning/tweakin.

85shorty496, I don't remember the part # on the pistons. They're listed as 10.2:1 CR and are part of the Eagle forged stroker kit. I'm using the 850 because I already had it. I'll tune on it for a while to make the best of it. It's working for now, so yeah I guess I like it. If money were no object, I'd get a carb from Pro SYstems. They recommended a 1000 cfm 4150 for my setup.

67rs502,
Seeing your comments and Bob West's comments, I'm guessing a converter change WOULD help. My cam is a solid roller: 243/249 @ .050 and .655/.663". My car weighs 3775 with 1/2 tank of gas and no driver (I weigh 235 -- ouch). Patrick at Pro SYstems recommended a 1000 cfm 4150 for my setup. I wonder if I can tune this car into low elevens with my 850 and my streetfighter converter? I plan to tune waht I have before I start to throw money and parts at it.

What was your 60ft with the drag radials? We have a street legal race coming up Oct 8th and I'll have to put the drag radials back on to run it, hoping it will stay in the 1.4x range. I think a good converter is worth 2-3 tenths easy. I couldnt buy a 10 second pass last fall, replaced the 10" ATI with the 8", jumped in with both feet last spring and it still wasnt deadhooking.

Bob,
my 60' was 1.68 with the drag radials. I really didn't feel them turning, either. I have a few buddies that run them on faster cars and they really like them. Bob, now you're making me want to call ATI about a converter. Maybe this winter...

I was in the 10.30 range with the 10" B&M race converter I was running. Swithched to an ATI 9", and went slower......but I was spinning worse.
Fixed the suspension, and am now in the high nines. Also a pump gas 496, and I drive it to the track.
A bit different than yours, AFR heads, 260/266 .677/.687 110 solid roller, and a Quick Fuel Dominator. But 9.4:1.
496's will leave you wanting more.
My Nova is lighter, and that is ET, plain and simple.
You won't be happy as time goes on till you are in the tens.
But that's what we do, right?

BTW Bob, a buddy switched his stock 950 for a Quick Fuel 1050 on the new World Merlin X intake, and went from 10.50's @ 127 to 10 teens @ 133+.
And it aint no dual plane....

Something to consider.
Of course that is in another 3500 lb flyweight Nova.

The excessive weight is most of the missing E.T. and speed. If there is a lot of stereo equipment you could take it out. Your still quite a ways from the tens and with over 4000 lbs. it's going to take quite a few changes to get there. A person just has to decide what they want the most.

What does he shift at Ron? I tried the dual/single plane (vic jr) swap last year and lost 60ft, e.t., gained a little mph. I shift at 6k, cross at 6-6500 depending if its 1000ft or 1/4 mile. Is that cam you're using a shelf grind or special order? Is it Comp?

You tried the swap before the heads and converter though right Bob? Also, going from a 4150 to a 4500 is part of the gain as well. The 4500 will make more power on a stout big block almost every time. JMHO.

I believe he shifts just past 6000. Car has the CompXR292R solid roller. Not much cam for a 540.
My cam is a Comp Custom XR series.

ati has a fall/ winter sale that starts soon. you can get a good converter for a good price. i'm thinking i saved about 100.00 on my 10" treemaster last year.
