: Dumpster diving- guess what I found?

Went up to my father in law's show, and happened to see a large trailer/dumpster full of cast iron pieces. So, I jumped in, and found several '80's aluminum intakes, and a 1963 shortblock, 283, 2bbl engine, nothing mindblowing. I get the block home, and began looking it over, and notice the crankshaft. This thing has a MO code 302 crankshaft in it, casting #3815822X. Still have to pull the bearings to see what size it is. Pretty good find if I say so myself.

He, He!!

I can barely put my bare 283 block up over the top of my S-i-L's Ranger II tailgate when it's latched!! Getting too old to do that crap anymore, what with my damned pinched leg nerve now..

I don't know what the hell you are talking about.
STD's are a bad thing to my generation.

Was 302 a rare chevy motor for the early camaro? I would never think to look for one inside of a 283.

Sure, but he gets on buses to find his parts, ain't know way he's dumpster diving (too much of a pre-madonna). And to boot he'd call me with the part numbers before he'd go any further.:D :p

I don't know what "MO" code is, or if the "X" at the end of the number means anything, but that crank number is listed at mortec as 265, 283, and 302 forged. Nice crank, especially std/std. Which ones were surface hardened?

I was thinking the same thing. This sounds like a 1badss396 story. How did you get it out of the dumpster?

dumpster diving can be more dangerous than one might think...i know of one guy who broke a femur (or whatever you call an upper leg bone) and one who bruised/collapsed/punctured a lung (one or more, you pick 'em)...and ended up in an icu with pnuemonia that required surgery, the only lucky thing was, they werent alone when it happened

Wow.I wonder how my brother managed to crack the cranshaft snout (where the balanacer goes on) his 283 motor? I remember something about having to tap the center hole because the 283's had a press on harmonic balancer... is that right? If so, then maybe he tapped it wrong.

Somewhere around 1964, there were some cast 283 cranks produced.

Supposedly, ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL early Vette cranks were the ONLY hardened cranks (it was a nitriding process, Billk can probably expand on this). But, I don't know if this continued through the 327 series or if it was only the 283 Vette cranks. Also, this hardning was only on the surface, thus if the crank got turned or ground too much, the hard surface was removed and either had to be re-hardened or just assembled as is without the hardened.

The 302 was a 327 bore (4") with a 283 stroke (3"), the motor in the original Z-28's. Very rare in '67, not so much in '68 & '69, but still a really  high-winding hot rod motor.
