Need help in finding the correct trunk paint for a 69 SS. I know about the plast-kote stuff and its not like the original stuff.

Gm still sells it for about $8 a can. It's the best, although it will need to be top coated with clear.

I just did mine again last summer, GM part # 1051498 for gray and white.

As Jason mentioned, make sure you top it off with a satin or dull clear sealant.

A 69 should have the black/aqua splatter, some parts stores carry the spray can variety. They must have some clear put over them or else it they get damp the paint comes off.

Micky's right - black & aqua for '69. That GM part # is 1051499. You can order it cheap from www.gmpartsdirect.com (http://www.gmpartsdirect.com) but there's a 6-can minimum.

Is the Gm stuff different in appearance than the plastikote and is it close to the original?

Here we go again with what is the correct colors. Of all the 69's I've seen in the past year they were split between the two colors. Mine was already gray and white and needed just a touch up so I went with the same. Could different plants have used the different colors? I've gone through this same scenario with other cars in the past.

Personally I think the aqua and black looks a lot better. I would appreciate some further input on this guys.

Don, all I have seen are pre-68 cars with the gray/white, 68-up are black /aqua. Just my findings not gospel.

66 = Black/white, ( a few 66's have been noted as getting black/acqua )

67 dark gray/acqua

I mean as long as we are starting a Restoration forum http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

But of course always sticking with room for exceptions http://www.chevelles.com/forum/wink.gif

Don -

I think part of the confusion comes from the fact that the original black & aqua spatter does not have a rich look to it, i.e. the aqua is very faint. At least that's how it appears to me in both of my 70's, which have the original spatter.

My '69 (black/aqua) original. Needs redone, can you get this stuff in quarts anymore? The thought of rattle cans just doesn't seem right.......

Thanks for the clarification guys, I appreciate it.

Now it's decision time. Mine is a 300 Deluxe and did not get the houndstooth trunk mat from the factory. All that was available on the 300's was a dealer installed black trunk mat. Personally, I don't think this black mat would look good with the darker aqua/black paint. I'm not overly concerned with originality and prefer it to look good.

Certainly no big deal to redo the trunk, just another winter project I guess. If you are inclined, go to the slide show on my website for a picture of the trunk and let me know what you think.

I'd say it would look just as good, if not better, with the black & aqua. The GM variety is not as dark as some other "black & aqua" brands. Here's a shot of the trunk of my 68 Lemans driver that was done with the GM stuff and a satin clear. Its a little dirty, but you can still get an idea of the difference:

Thanks for the pic Rainer, gives me a good idea of how it would look. Once I get my engine compartment back together then I will decide if I go ahead with this change.
