I understand Methanol cools the intake charge and creates more oxygen, this correct?

I have a system installed on my other car....Only been running 50/50 water/windshield washer fluid. Seems to do a decent job of cooling the intake charge and keeping carbon down to a minimum. Definitely noticeable difference in power with than without it..I want to try some straight methanol in it this weekend..Car is F.I .fwiw...

Anyone tried it in a N/A setup? I understand in boosted applications the difference can be HUGE, wondering if anyone has any dyno/ET experience with this...Any drawbacks?
Hope its not too off topic as its not on a Chevelle, but if it proves worthy Id like to try it on the El once its running and broken in.

If the car isn't detonating it will not add any extra power from the water/methanol injection-- you'll lose some actually because of reduced combustion chamber temps, which means less cylinder pressure and therefore less torque.

The only way to realize power gains with the methanol injection is to advance the timing beyond what the engine can withstand on gas-only to take advantage of the higher octane of the methanol... but then if the pump ever fails or you run out of methanol the engine will ping as you're now running too much timing for straight gas.

Also remember methanol is corrosive to aluminum.

Same principals apply to water/methanol injection on a boosted engine although now the charge-cooling effect has a much bigger role than an N/A application. I run water injection only for intake charge cooling and to help prevent detonation, I can get away with 3-3.5 degrees more timing under full boost running the water and that leads to quite a bit more power.

The guy that won the Naturally Aspirated Small Block class on Drag Week this year used it on his 12:1 pump gas 428" Pontiac motor. He ran 10.6's.

He tried running with it and without it and actually ran faster WITHOUT the methanol injection. Like others stated it helps eliminate detonation if you are pushing the limits.

Hmm, thanks for the feedback..

It has some more timing programmed into the tune, guessing thats why it was installed....Id like to get some dyno time and see whats what. Made 355rwhp w/o just before I bought it.

Well, youre right, it did slow me down a bit. I used a 50% mixture of methanol so I wouldn wreck the pump and it felt lean, like it wasnt making the same power. Drained it, put the 5% mix in and all was better. Guess it needs a tune specifically for it. Had a good time at the track though, Famoso rocks!
