The gray primer thats on my 68 Elky when I bought it a few months ago ,it looked like it has some cracks in it or possible crazing (obviously from TOO MANY COATS of primers and paints on it) . I was going to strip it down to bare metal using POR-strip (as Ive used it before on a 69 Chevelle), then I was going to use all PPG products , I would like to use the PPG DP90LF (BLACK) epoxy primer on the entire Elky. My question is this : Can I spray on the DP90LF black epoxy primer and then the next day or two spray some kind of clear over it to help protect it while I drive that way till I can get paint on it ? if so, what would be the cheapest clear that I could get that would do the job of holding up untill I could get paint on it next summer (of 2005) ? Does anyone know the PPG part number on the clear that would work ? I guess you could do that, but what a waste of clear. Why don't you just epoxy primer it and let it go. When you are ready to finish the body work, just shoot another light coat of epoxy and follow that with your primer 8 to 24 hours later.

Yep...no need to put anything over the epoxy. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Unless it is going to sit out in the sun for months, I mean MONTHS, the epoxy will hold up just fine. It is insoluable after all.

One thing I have to say though, be sure you apply a PROPER FULL coat each coat, over the WHOLE thing.

I say this because, I have seen (on my own projects as well) that we tend to get lazy when shooting primer. Along with the long hard learned lessons of COMPLETELY covering a panel with primer/paint or clear we tend to REALLY not do this proper on primer.

As you are applying the primer, bend over and be sure to get it on the lower edges COMPLETELY, get around all edges COMPLETELY.

It may look like it is completly covered but the thin primer will break down fast and your metal can be exposed.

Thanks MARTINSR, The car will be garaged except for the time it will sit outside at work in the lot. I will make sure that everything will be COMPLETELY covered before driving it. One ouestion about stripping : After chemically stripping the car down (POR-STRIP) what is the next thing that you have used or like using to then neutralize the stripper before any other thing is done ?
