What is the best primer to use on bare metal. It is going to be in primer for a while. It will be driven daily. Black would be nice. Thanks for the help.

Purchase and use a self-etching primer. Then top-coat with a good urethane or epoxy two- part primer. All self-etching primers need to be top-coated with 'regular' primer. NAPA Martin Senour (and others) can mix primer in many colors also. Just a thought.

Are you gonna sand it off and re-prime it before you're ready to paint? In that case, any self-etching epoxy or urethane primer should do (as Jimmy posted). If not, you need to make sure the (self-etching epoxy or urethane) primer is from the same line of paint that you plan on putting over it. PPG has a relatively new urethane primer called Uniprime DTM (Direct to Metal) that is sweet...the only drawback is it's expensive as it's part of their top of the line paint system.

Can I run just the self etching primer for a while before the top coat primer? Its going to be some time before paint comes. I really just want to protect until then.

The self etching primer is a bit porous so I wouldn't run it alone. Just put the etch and then an epoxy or urethane. It is always best to stick with one brand from metal to clear, but one brand of paint to another isn't going to care what primer it has under it. Think about it, if you were to fix a dent in your new 2001 Camaro and then spot paint it blending out the color and clear, you wouldn't have a problem. As long as you are following the directions for the products you are using and match the "technologies" (urethane to urethane, etc).
Just don't mix products together like Dupont hardener in PPG paint.

Well said mrtnsenour the first time I painted my 68 the paint shop slipped me some generic hardener for my centari enamel. As the paint hardened the nice blue started getting big white blotches all over it. I didnt care about the price of the stuff and if I had known I would have bought centari hardener. It was only my seconed paint job and I was trusting the paint store to point me in the right direction. Showed them what it did but was like talking to a wall. Pissed me off royally, but live and learn.
