Over the past 17 years I have been working on my chevelle and stripped all of the paint off about 10 years ago and then put various spray can primers on it to protect it from the elements. I went to a body shop and they said they would give me a cheaper price if I give it to them bare metal. So I started taking off all of the old primer and the coating on the new fenders and skins and was wondering if any of you guys ever shipped your naked chevelle to a body shop without any kind of protection over top of the metal. I will be trailering it to them from my garage which is heated and kept at 70 degrees at all times and then go outside to 20 degrees here in Ohio and then go back into the heated body shop, that would make it flash rust wouldn't it? Would a car cover be good enough?

David, I use PPG DX1791 which is a clear primer and is fairly inexpensive after we strip our cars. It is self etching also, and sands off easy if needed.

After stripping my car in hot fl humidity and sittin around for a couple weeks my car car had no problems. I ued this stuff i got at Home depot called Aspho or Ispho (?) they'll know its metal protectant and it worked great no rust or anything. All you do is soak a rag with it and wipe it on kinda like prep-sol
Good Luck

David, a great product for this application is Spies/Hecker 3255, red-brown primer. It is an excellant etch primer that will protect metal outside for up to 6 mos. It can then be easily scuffed and preped for urethane primer later. It can also be used as a weld-through primer. Also comes in spray cans. E-mail for more info.
