I have been working on my 68 chevelle for a few years now. I did a complete frame off and nearly everything was taken down to metal. I have finished the new trunk, inner and outer wheel wells, quater skins, and front fender patches. I painted the bottom of the car and the frame and have smoothed things out the best I could all with ppg brand. Now I am at a point where I can't really go much further on the body. My attempts to get the quaters any straiter is just more than I can do with my limited experience. A painter came to my house last night and walked me through everything I can still do to save money (like taking out the rest of the glass, and wire brushing nooks and cranys) and told me what to leave for him (like getting the quarters straite) he then said to leave most of the car in bare metal when I get there and that he would prime the whole car, shoot the trunk, dash, engine compartment, get everything strait and paint the car for around $4,000 - $4,500. Does this price sound about right? No tri-stage paints just color with some pearl. Thanks in advance for any advice.

You are about exactly where I'm at on my 72. Mine is primed/blocked, with just a few minor "waves" still to straighten out, the doors and front clip is off. I found an experienced body/paint man, who works at a dealer to install and align the body parts, final prime and block the body, then paint for around $3000 plus materials which should be around $700-$1000. I think it's a good price and can't wait till it's done!

What ever you do, GET IT IN WRITING!!! I just got a $4000.00 paint job from a local custom shop here. Friends of friends. Good (supposely) rep. I paid cash, and had a verbal warranty. The paint bubbled (blister pop) all over the car within the year. The whole car is trashed. They will not repaint it. They stripped it to bear metal too. I am $4000.00 in the hole and will take another $ 4g's to restrip it and repaint it. The paint shop is www.chickenscustoms.com if you care. Just learn from my mistake. Even a pro can make mistakes from time-to-time. Just get it in WRITING!! If they don't have anything on paper, take Microsoft Word and write something out yourself for them to sign.

You won't find out until it's done.

I had the same problem. Had a local shop that was supposed to be "great" do my 68 chevelle. I paid $5,000 for the paint and bodywork, not including the metal and body panels that I bought. Within the year, it started rusting worse than it was before. They say I have to pay for everything again if I want it fixed. Yeah right! (they're the ones that messed it up...they should eat the cost!) Just make sure you get a written estimate and warranty on the work! Good luck!
