Dan... Most, if not all the major auto paint company's use a computer program that matches the 35 year old paint codes to a much newer code like in the last 10 years. My point is this: if you go to Sherwin-Williams for example, and ask for ash gold 68 Chevelle paint, the comp. will match the paint to the closest formula available today. It may be a 96 Ford color. So if they tell you they can't mix ash gold they mean the color may not be exactly the same shade it was in 68. Who is painting the car? What brand paint do they use? If your gonna paint the car and need the Sherwin-Williams code, I can get it... I used S-W Grecian Green on mine..You can see it in my sig pic below...

I got my code with the PPG machine the Prophet, that scanned the underside of my decklid. Excellent match and easy to mix more in any quantity if needed. I love Grecian Green, I had two '68s that color, at the same time!

Dave... How well did the new color match the deck lid paint? I considered matching it with the gun but I wasn't sure the paint on the deck lid bottom was original. I went with a newer color, and it matched the paint chip I had from a brochure perfect. It all comes down to the guy mixing the paint anyway. Also the conditions when the car is painted.

Mine was a perfect match, the car was a 30k unmolested original. I did not paint the doorjambs or underside of the decklid and it was perfect .I was very pleased with the results of the Prophet and would use it again IF I had a good surface to work from. I would have to say from my detailed examination of your car in Nashville that your paint was 99% like mine was. My other '68 was a survivor and the decklid and jambs matched my other car as well. There was a HH car at CB03 that was so off that it wsa almost not even the same color!

I painted a 71 the original green(forget the name, but it was like a forest green) Shot the original color with Dupont Chromavision camera and it came up a 90's VW formula. The headlight extensions were original paint. When i jambed in the fender i painted the who;e thing to show the owner the color, when i set the extension on the fender it was a DEAD match. The camaera is not always perfect though, I used it trying to match the original blue on a 69 Roadrunner and it came up with a purple Daewoo color and a few others that were not even close. Tried every other brand of paint and noone could mix it. Eventually had the Dupont rep come and custom mix it for me. So i would say from that experience there are some colors that cant be mixed from a formula. You can get something darn close though.

SSuper Dave, if you have that formula for Grecian green in PPG it'd LOVE to have it!!! Look at my signature, I have a factory Grecian green 68SS with red buckets and a black vinyl top and I really want to keep the factory color combo because I think it's unique.

E-mail me offline and I can fax it to you Monday.
I have it printed from PPGs machine with tints and percentages, any PPG paint store can mix it from that.
