How many people here have rust under their rear cowl? (under the rear windsheild, in the trunk) and i don't mean sissy, surface rust, i mean: big, manly, i've-gotta-cut out-that-panel-and-reweld-it-before-my-car falls-apart, MUSCLE CAR rust. >grunt<

King. Do you mean something like http://www.si.hhs.nl/~rob/images/scanned/007_trnk_pl_11_9811.jpg
I replaced the panel and welded a drain pipe on each end of the window channel.

This is the most common place for rust on all A-Body cars. Bad design that traps water in the glass ledge and under the trim. It stays there. Eventually leaking past the back glass seal, it finds it's way into all of the bare metal where the factory spot welded the quarters to the rear. Also leaves get underneath the trim to further hold moisture in there. Once you get it repaired, alot of folks POR-15 the whole area. Then, once the back glass and trim are re-installed, put some clear silicone caulking around the trim to glass opening to prevent water from going in there. If you do a good job, you won't be able to notice the caulk at all.

Jimmy,
Not to go against what you're saying, all of which sounds like the right way to go, (Especially the POR-15--great stuff) but I've heard that Silicone actually RETAINS water, thus promoting rust. I've heard guys say to use 3M weatherstrip.

Jim72. No, but thanks anyway. By now all the rust has been removed by replacing panels and sandblasting. I'm almost done shooting the first coat of the final color ( http://www.si.hhs.nl/~rob/images/scanned/193_ass_fr_bdy_lft.jpg , better pictures are coming up soon) As you may have noticed, I live in Europe and shipping costs would kill me.
