: Exposed metal

I have another question. Lots to learn yet.

I was looking to get some media blasting done on my '66 soon. My rear quarters are off the car right now, and I want to take advantage of that. I'm going to get as much of the inner areas and trunk done as I can. My question is how long can I safely leave the areas as exposed bare metal? I was watching one of these car fix-up shows on Discovery Channel (sorry....I know that can be a lame reference.....but heh, it's fun to watch). Anyways, they talked about not leaving a care in bare metal because it will quickly rust (or something like that).

After I get the media blasting done, and get the car back home to my garage, will I have the luxury of a few days to do some patch panels and such before priming and painting?

Thoughts?

depends on your climate conditions, but i have seen metal that i prepped by blasting (mostly aircraft ground support equipment, it is all steel just like a car) rust overnight. granted not bad, but surface rust still would have to be removed again by sanding etc.

It depends. I screwed up the stripes on my Chevelle when I first painted it, I stripped the paint off the trunk and rear deck panel and left it for 2 years. I finally got back to it and there was NO rust at all on it, of course it was covered and in the garage.

I know a guy back in Iowa that has a 35 Ford that has been sitting in bare metal since the late 80's to early 90's and NOT a speck of rust.
His trick of succes........a fan that runs non stop moving air over and around the car 24 hrs a day 365 days a year.
But still its best to cover up that metal ASAP

Sounds like plenty of factors to think about. I'll probably only leave it for a day or two. It'll be in my garage, so it should be safe.

Thanks,
