Help...I installed a new dash with autometer fuel gauge 0-90 ohm. Checked continuity on wire from tank to gauge, cleaned the ground and the gauge still reads full. I assume the sender is bad. I have a new one, in a box. Question Can it be installed with fuel in the tank, if not how does one tell how much fuel is in the tank  Thanks in advance

What kind of vehicle?
Some have the sender in the top of the tank which means you have to drop the tank down.

Naturally, the more gas that's in it, the heaver it will be.

How do you tell how much it has in it?
Knock on it and see how the sound echos.
Take you lawn more gas can along and drive around the block until you run out.
Pour a gallon in and drive home.

{EDIT} oops, sorry I didn't notice "66" in the title :o

Call me overly cautious... but wouldn't you want to empty the tank, before doing anything with the tank ??? A slip of a tool, or electrical short, could create a spark. The contained fumes alone are enough to flash from a spark. 15 Gallons of gas could propel you to the next county.

I dunno but I suspect the explosion of an empty tank would be worse than one with gas in it.
I sure hope I don't ever find out.

Actually it's just about impossible to get all of the gas out.
I'be been hauling cars to the shreader lately, pulling the gas tanks and cutting an 8" X 10" hole in them with a die grinder/cut off blade. (that's the only way they will take the gas tanks)
I find that I can't get ALL of the gas out.

Oh btw, I remove the sending units and keep a garden hose running water into them and overflowing while I do the cutting.
that blade can really throw the water

Thanks to all of you. I'll do alittle of each. If you don't hear from me look in the papers for car explosions..:-) Thanks jeff
