: Any Razr phone owners?
chevelless502 Sep 11th, 06, 11:03 PM I know i am way behind the times but i just got a new cell phone and its a Razr. So far i really like it. What i was wondering if there is anyone here who bought the software along with their phone to download things to and from the phone? The dealer wanted $50 for it and i thought that was nuts or is it worth it?
Thanks
Andy
Andy69 Sep 12th, 06, 12:37 AM I'm still trying to figure out this blanket and smokey fire and how I'm supposed to use it to call in sick to work....
Cameano Sep 12th, 06, 12:44 AM I have a Razr. You shouldn't need any more software for downloads, but I guess it'd also depend who your carrier is. I have Cingular. They want $15/mo for wireless web, but for as much as I use it, it'd be a big waste of money. I use the pay as you go feature instead. The typical ringtone download from the phone only (vs. selecting it on their website and sending it to the phone) costs about $1.50 plus the ringtone, from what I've found. $.01/kb is the cost.
Chris R Sep 12th, 06, 2:56 AM Funny thing. I was going to ask about the Razr phone too. I have had one for about 6 months now.
Problem with mine was it kept inducing feedback into the speakers on my computer and if I got to close to the TV with while on the phone. Same thing. Also does this with my clock radio so I have to keep the phone on the floor next to the bed or it will randomly just induce some wierd feedback into my little clock radio speaker. Scared he freaking hell out of my the first night I got it without warning right in the middle of the night.
I even called Cingular about this same problem and they sent me a new phone and this one does the same thing as well as my coworkers same phone.
I have also heard of some having problems with an "Insert sim" message popping up from time to time. Mine never did that till the same coworker asked me once if it did. By coincidence. That weekend I got the same message for the first time. I guess its a common thing with them.
Burbank SS Sep 12th, 06, 3:13 AM I bought software on line with a cable when my wife's phone broke. We were able to download her address book. That was very valuable. As a bonus, I downloaded a free ringtone because I was always too cheap to buy one!
If for no other reason but to get your contact list backed up on the computer, I'd go for it.
Be careful with the Razr, I hear they can be fragile.

One of my hinges broke for apparently no reason after only 4 months or so. Called Motorola and Cingular and got the run-around. Ended up E-baying the parts.
Xtreme70SS396 Sep 12th, 06, 8:11 AM I beat mine to death, no trouble at all. Might have been a bad part or something.
If you turn off your bluetooth, you may not have the interference issues anymore - don't know, just a thought.
I have a wireless keyboard/mouse at work - used that bluetooth device to send/retrieve stuff like photos from the phone, works great. Definitely the best phone I've had so far in terms of sound quality, volume and features. Also seems to have better signal quality (bars) than different phone with the same service in the same place.
Sim message pops up sometimes when you lose service I think. Seems like a glitch, "reboot" fixes it. Had my razr for over a year now, SIM has happened maybe 3-4 times.
MJRIBEIRO Sep 12th, 06, 8:20 AM You may be able to use freeware called bitpim - I have a razr and was going to try it once I find the mini usb cable floating around the house.
Olle Sep 12th, 06, 9:30 AM I looked briefly at that software, but I don't know how useful it would be to me. The only thing I can think of would be to keep my phone list updated, and maybe keep a backup. If I buy another phone or want to sync my cellphones (got one private and one company phone), Verizon will transfer the phone list for me, so that part is not a problem.
I don't care about ringtones, backgrounds etc, so that part is not interesting to me. And as I can send pictures through e-mail from the phone, the picture download is not very important either.
I guess I'm just old fashioned: I use my cell phone almost exclusively for phone calls (alright, I'm e-mailing pictures occasionally), so I don't really need that software.
As far as the quality of the phone goes, it seems to be pretty sturdy so far. It's a bit scratched and dinged up but nothing has broken yet. I don't like the keys though, it's kinda difficult to hit the right one on that thin, photoetched keypad.
BB_Mike Sep 12th, 06, 9:44 AM I like mine.
I've dropped it a few times and it still works well.
The feeback noise has to due with your carrier and the type of signal they use to communicate with your phone. The "feedback" will only happen when updates are sent to you phone, or a call is incomming. If your home electronics had shielded speakers, the problem would go away. A hint towards fixing the problem: Put the phone in a metal box, and set it next to your speakers. Maybe wrap your radio in aluminum foil. :D Other than that, it's a distance thing. Greater than 5 feet should stop the feedback noise.
I'm too normal for fancy ringtones, so I just use teh bluetooth connection to get pictures and such off.
i wish I could charge this phone via a computer USB port.
Skeeveman Sep 12th, 06, 10:29 AM As the assistant Admin of the IT department at my company, I also am in control of all our corporate cellular accounts. This includes Verizon, Cingular, and Sprint/Nextel. Hundreds of phones in fact. So, I can pretty easily answer these questions.
Personally, one of the cell phones I carry around is a RAZR, and they can take the abuse, but I've seen them broken many times as well. As for the noise they make around radios and such, that's just normal interference, no need to worry. This will happen mainly with GSM and iDEN phones, such as Cingular, and Nextel. You will hear clicking noises and wierd buzzing before the phone even rings. And sometimes just standing around them will make them tick. There is nothing you can do. Also on Cingular RAZR's, I have yet to see a single one that didn't make a high pitched ring in your ear when you hold it next to your ear when a call isn't in progress, again, a side effect of GSM.
As for getting ringtones, in my opinion it is worthless to pay even a buck for a ringtone to download. If you get a copy of Motorola Phone tools, which is only 25 bucks, you can make your own ringtones with songs on your computer and never have to pay again. RAZR's and other Moto's by default are real quiet out of the box, and if you notice, just to hear on them, you have to have the volume cranked up. If you download a program called P2K tools, you can modify the gain tables (hex) to increase the volume. This is very important to do if you have a bluetooth headset. I was using an HS850 and couldnt hear anything when there was background noises, such as traffic or just people talking loudly, unless I press the thing closer to my head...what's the point. And trust me, it's not because I'm deaf, I've got golden ears of sorts, haha.
The list of mods you want to do to the RAZR are virtually endless, though, I'm getting bored of mine now, want to try something new. I can still link you to a lot of things if you want, just PM me.
ssal396 Sep 12th, 06, 12:40 PM I have one, but I must be a DORK because all that I use it for is a phone :D So far, I love it & the reception is much better then any other phone that I've had in the past..

Could you explain this a bit more, please?
Download from where?
Easy to use? i.e., self-explanatory?
Does it go beyond the clarity levels of the internal speaker, or is it still clear?
ChevyGirl66 Sep 12th, 06, 3:26 PM I have one...Had it since december. Ive dropped it far too many times, a couple knicks, but still works well. A couple things.. I can't make/record video. Apparently the early Black Razrs didn't have the software? I've been told to just go to the Cingular Store to download it, but Im never 'conviently' by one. And a few times, I never thought Id stay this, but it freezes, nothing works to turn turn it off and on except taking out the battery.

Finally Sep 12th, 06, 4:22 PM Had mine since the beginning of the year. As mentioned reception is much better than the other phones I've had, same carrier. That's the main reason I purchased one. I have the P2K software. Used it to download a pic of the Chevelle as my screensaver and wallpaper. Aside from that it's just a phone to me, I can make and receive calls.

.....And you couldn't have just taken a pic of it with the phone, WHY????? :D :waving:
Never Satisfied Sep 12th, 06, 4:45 PM .....And you couldn't have just taken a pic of it with the phone, WHY????? :D :waving:
I must suck at taking pics, because when I tried that, it looked like crap. I ended up having to use the service at Cingular to accomplish it....wasted $3 to do it too :clonk:

No one likes a smart a** Scott! Picture quality with that little phone in the camera is no where near as good.
vrooom3440 Sep 12th, 06, 6:19 PM I have had the "insert SIM" messages a few times too... seems to occur when you least expect it and you only discover it sometime later by accident.
I don't know if it is coincidence or not but I have not gotten this annoying message since I tweaked the back cover. It seemed loose on the sides and only has a locating tab in the center. So I tried to bend the center out and tighten up the sides. Have not seem the message since but now that I have talked about Murphy will strike.
You can certainly charge these things off of a USB port on a computer so long as you have the right cable. The phone end of the cable seems to be a newer standard as well, or at least I am seeing them around more now. The Motorola info claimed it would charge very slowly from USB but that has not been my experience at all, it seems just as fast as the wall charger.
DOUG G Sep 12th, 06, 6:56 PM RazrV3 here (about 4 months) and still learning it... very thin and easy to drop . I did find that if you use the voice record and record a tune you can make the tune a ringtone :D

I have seen the same thing, wierd.

Oh my God! Look what I typed, 'phone the camera' instead of 'camera in the phone'. :clonk: And you didn't even catch it Scott.:p
Chris R Sep 13th, 06, 4:06 AM Ok, for you guys that are doing all these fancy, computery, techy things with the Razr. What do I need to do this then? Im cheap and dont really feel like spending money on my phone because like a few others have mentioned, I really only use this for what it really is. A phone. But it would be cool to add a few things to it though.
david_396 Sep 13th, 06, 8:32 AM My Razor had a recall. I keep phone in pocket and I began to notice what looked like dust on the screen that had gotton behind the display. Called cingular and was told that there was a recall on this version. They sent me a new phone. Swapped the SIM card and Battery cover and I was up and running. Retutned phone in prepaid box. otherwise great phone

LOL, I just had a Birthday.. I must be getting old  :o :D
Olle Sep 13th, 06, 10:43 AM Picture quality with that little phone in the camera is no where near as good.
If you are going to use the picture as a wallpaper in the phone, you can take pictures that are good enough, can't you? The only problem I have had is that it's difficult to hold that little lightweight phone steady, but with both hands or some other kind of support it takes pretty good pictures. And you probably need to clean the lens before you take the picture, mine is almost always covered with dust or fingerprints.
Carguy00 Sep 13th, 06, 11:16 AM How do you use the voice record? When I do it and try to replay it is is so quiet you can't hardly hear it. Even if you yell into the speaker when recording to plays back sooo quiet. Thanks
Here is what I did with the cover on mine

Google P2K Commander, should find a link to download it. You'll need the mini-usb cable to plug your phone into computer. P2K Commander is like a 2 pane Explorer. You can show files on the phone in 1 pane and your PC in the other. You can copy from one to the other, delete, rename, etc.

I have searched for download of the P2k commander software, but can not find one.
I sent you a PM a few days ago. Let me know if you can help point me in the write direction. Or, maybe you can email me the .zip of the software?

BB_Mike Sep 13th, 06, 1:33 PM Sweet! I had found that .com page, but the work firewall would not let it load. But your direct link to the file allowed it to come right through!
SS_Sean Sep 13th, 06, 4:00 PM The volume on mine sucks!
DOUG G Sep 14th, 06, 6:09 PM Mine is pretty loud. Hate when it goes off in the wee hours for work.

Use with caution, you can delete, move, rename the wrong files and put your phone in dumper.
Skeeveman Sep 14th, 06, 10:02 PM Sorry it's taken so long to reply, guys. I've been REALLY busy at work the last few days, still trying to finish up the merge of two networks between our headquarters and our north side office building.
Anyway, I didn't think I'd get so many PM's about the RAZR.
That's right, you'll need a USB cable, the easiest, and cheapest way to find one without ordering on the net, or going to an electronics store is to go to wal mart and getting a USB data cable for the Sony PSP, same exact thing. You'll find them in the electronics by all the XBOX, PS2, and PSP accessories.
As for modding, more then you'll ever need to know will be found at www.motomodders.net
