How much to thin the Blackkote POR 15 with their solvent/thinner for use in a spray gun? Is it 20%?Cant seem to find the ratio. I am ready to top coat my POR-15 treated frame and small parts.

I looked through my info and on their Web Site and can't find it either. You probably already know they recommend thinning the regular POR 15 no more than 5%.
http://www.por15.com/faqs/por15faq.html#HowThin

I'd be inclined to start at 5% and increase from there if needed. If you've never e-mailed them before, I've found that they will answer your question within 1 business day.

Hope this helps some....

If you get a reply directly from POR, don't forget to post their response here!

Thanks,
mark.

I just finished spraying my frame with POR-15 about 2 weeks ago and used a wagner sprayer. I just thinned it until it shot outta the sprayer. I also used it in one of those cheapo hand pumping sprayers with the long necks to shoot inside the frame, so for the i thinned it even more. Everything dried perfect, just took a little longer. so what im saying is thin it until it works right i guess, but dont blame me if something happens to it! (im not saying it will) oh yeah and i used mineral spirits to thin it down.

PLEASE BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL SPRAYING POR!!! That stuff can kill you quick.. If memory server POR doesn't recommend spraying at all.. This is a time where I would highly recommend not spraying at all or using a complete enclosed fresh air system with VERY GOOD ventalation!

You guys will find that POR reccomends no more than 5%... However over time the product sitting in the can will start to thicken up mopre and more. I have thinned as much as 20% and still sprayed with good results. Basically thinning as much as necessary to spray well no more.

And definitly head caution for MORE THAN adequate ventilation when spraying. Nearly killed myself the first time I sprayed... Resporatory problems as well as spray back into my eyes in close quarters. It wasn't pretty.

Norm is 110% correct. I did my frame outside so i had good ventilation but i still did it with a respirator. Also i used a diposable jumpsuit and mask along with glasses and latex gloves. for the first time i never got the stuff on me.

Since you're from PA I'll assume it it pretty cold up there. In that case yes, it should be thinned in VERY SMALL amounts. In hotter weather it needs no thinning at all.

Yes, I thinned 5% and sprayed the other nite in 45 degree temp. in my makeshift paint booth. POR was room temp. of 70 and it turned out well. Used a respirator and sprayed in one bay of my garage tarped off and garage door open for air. No adverse reactions to POR in the air.

I had e-mailed POR several months ago and they had recommended not to spray it. They said it was to dangerous to spary.

I have been spraying it 2 of the last 5 days, wear a good respirator, and have ventilation, the results are awesome!!

Weird because the documentation I have they state to thin with their thinning solution and give directions on doing so.

I didnt realize POR made so many products until looking at this catalog. They got all kinds of stuff.

Im not sure what the POR thinner/solvent is, it just may be lacquer thinner, but it costs 8 bucks a qt.
