autobody9 Sep 11th, 06, 1:15 PM Hi, I am new to the board. I own a 67 396 El Camino that is in the process of a three year resto. That is not why I am posting. I just bought a boat that has a 67 325 HP 396 Chevy in it. Boat runs great. The problem I have is that the boat is better suited to a small block. The size of the small block would allow for more room in the boat. I really have no idea what the value of the motor would be. I live in Boise, ID. How do I know if this is a 427 or 396? In decoding the 3855961P number it says either 396 0r 427. The same happens with the head numbers. The same happens with the head numbers. Thank You It is a 66 396. The EN suffix identifies it as a L34 (360HP) with powerglide transmission and smog pump. The partial VIN indicates it came out of a 66 Chevelle assembled at Fremont, Ca. This is definitely a 396. The 702 heads were used on oval port 396s and 427s in 1966. The 360HP is basically the same as the 325HP engine with the main difference being the camshaft.
