for AM radio either or. if ordered with AM/FM front only. or at least thats how I understand it
rocks66ss Sep 8th, 06, 5:47 PM Not sure if it made any difference on a vert, but a rear antenna was an option, AM only, and they were never slanted! AM/FM front.

I agree with what keith said, and will add to it.
AM antenna was a telescoping mast where as the AM/FM car received a solid mast and was front mount only.
and all of the antenna were straight up and down, not at an angle.
Let's see if anybody knows the details of an optional power antenna?? ;)
I would bet Mike (Mystery Chevelle knows).
rocks66ss Sep 8th, 06, 5:59 PM You also might look on your cowl tag where the accessory codes are, and if you find a S=U73 code rear antenna. The line might look like this W2LGS

Trying to remember about the power rear antenna... I think it was also straight-up, but might have had a slight slant to it...
I bought a "loaded" Malibu 4-door hardtop as a parts car once. I needed the front clip. I also took all the A/C stuff, etc... I thought about the antenna, but I didn't realize how rare they were, and the mast was broken anyway, so it stayed in the car... Some time later I discovered how rare they were, and when I checked the dash panel, it still had the factory toggle switch with the spacer, etc... I went to the wrecking yard where the carcass was taken, but no sign of the car (pretty well stripped by then)...
I have never seen another '66 with a factory power antenna...
I picked up one pretty cheap, but I am not 100% sure its "Chevelle"... It is a GM, dated Nov 1965, and it is slightly slanted. Has a bracket to mount to the inner wheel house, similar to the Assembly Manual... Wish I could find an original/pictures to compare
66 Chevelle Bob Sep 8th, 06, 9:30 PM Ahhhhhhh Mike-Your always needed for your history facts. Did a 66 Chevelle SS ever have a rear slanted antenna...???

66 L78 ragtop Sep 9th, 06, 8:55 PM Here is a pic of the power antenna on my L78 coupe. It is original to the car as stated on the window sticker. The antenna is verticle.
RPO U75 (not U73)
The power antenna on the 66 GTO is slanted.

Would you have a picture of the dash switch as well?

Tom, here is a pic of the power antenna toggle switch from the same car
Ignore the big red wire, the original owner had installed an after market horn button.
