: Weird quadrajet problem :(
V8fan_russia Sep 8th, 06, 3:05 AM Hi.
Here is the problem -
stock fuel filter (which was mounted in carb) was clogged, so i've removed it and installed good inline filter (from fuel injected vehicle).
Started the car - it was idling good, even in "drive".
But after burnout (or heavy acceleration) the flooding begins - fuel comes out of vent.pipe, heavy black smoke, engine dies at idle... Ok - removed the top cover and adjusted float according to manual.
Started the car - good idle/everythig OK...
But after heavy acceleration the problem comes again :(
Needle, seat and float are brand new.
I have no fuel return line, stock fuel pump...
Maybe addition of the return line will help ?
When you put the carb back together, did you put the little spring back that goes on top of the needle? Sounds like you are getting way too much gas flow to the carb. What is the pressure coming from the fuel pump? I'm a firm believer of keeping a car stock. In other words, should your car have a return line to the fuel tank? I think you would be suprised at how much fuel really does get returned to the fuel tank.
Tom Mobley Sep 8th, 06, 9:14 AM let's see, it was working ok, you changed it, now it's hosed. why don't you put it back like it was, see what happens? are you able to get a new in-carb filter? there's a spring that goes behind it too. you save it?
AFAIK, Q-jets don't use the little spring on the needle-seat assembly.
there's no reason I know of to assume something magically increased your fuel pressure, it's likely that dirt of some kind is getting into the needle and seat. Also, it's possible that the float is the wrong style and is getting hung up scraping the sides of the main body.
Jerry Briggs Sep 8th, 06, 9:22 AM I had the same problem when removing the filter in the quadrajet, flooding and such as you describe. Put new one in and it quit. Haven't figured that one out yet, but it will definately flood gas without the stone filter in place. Jb
V8fan_russia Sep 8th, 06, 10:52 AM meb - i don't now if there must be the return line in stock :) When i've bought the car there was no fuel return line and there was fuel pump without provision for the return line.
Tom Mobley - it's not possible to get that filter here in Russia (well, it's possible, but it'll take too much time :) )...
There are no reasons to put the old filter back - it was too heavy clogged :(
Anyway, i've just installed a "T" style fitting between filter and carb and routed return line to the fuel tank... No flooding yet, it all seems to work fine for now... But i can't be sure, that the problem will not persist, say, in one week or one month :) Anyway - i don't want to install edelbrock or holly - i just love my quadrajet - in case of flooding i'll buy a pressure regulator %) ...
Thanks a lot :)
Its really that hard to get those filters in Russia? They cost about $1.50 a piece here in the states (for the paper filters). I kind of like the paper filters better. Does it cost a lot to ship to Russia? I'll mail you a couple.
BTW, if the fuel filter was THAT clogged...chances are that you have a lot of rust in the gas tank and it probably should be replaced. For that matter, I would replace the lines too, but they are a pain (if not impossible) to replace with the body on the car.

the only way to get 'em is to order them from US...Shipping costs 7.5$/1kg via air mail. The carb is not from this car, and upon the restoration of the car i've replaced the fuel lines and cleaned the tank :)
