: paint supplies/unheated garages
flywheel Jan 30th, 03, 7:15 AM My shop is only heated when I'm in there. Will there be any effect on the putty's/primers/paint if and when the temps go below freezing? They are of course warmed up after I've been in there for a short time...Thanks.

YenkoChevelle69 Jan 30th, 03, 10:49 AM I think freezing will ruin a can of paint. Don't quote me but I'm pretty sure I've heard it before.

sevt_chevelle Feb 1st, 03, 10:49 AM If your shop is at freezing point then your paint supplies are junk. I cant remember the excat recommend degree but I believe all paint should be stored above 55 degrees. If you look on the can it should tell you...Eric

GVMLS6 Feb 1st, 03, 11:46 PM I would recommend that you keep your shop at a minimum of 60 degrees, just to make sure you don't ruin your materials.

I asked the people at the local body shop/paint supply. All they would say is that their warehouse is not heated.
Troy70SS Feb 4th, 03, 3:26 PM I live in Florida now so I don't see much feezing weather but when I was growing up our garage in Ohio wasn't heated except when we were working in it. I don't remember ever having any problems with the materials because of the cold. I have heard it wasn't good for the materials but I think it would have to get pretty cold to freeze paint. Salt water doesn't freeze until it gets under 0º so I gotta think paint has to be safe at least to there. I don't think that thinner and bondo would have a problem either.
BTW - I moved down here 17 years ago and wouldn't you know it - my old man expanded his workshop from 600 sq ft to 2400 sq ft since I left. He told me when he was down for Thanksgiving my 1200 sq ft wasn't big enough.

SS_Dave Feb 4th, 03, 3:51 PM I know for a fact that Martin Senior clear coat is fine after several winters in an unheated outdoor shed. This stuff saw -19 deg F at one point. It is on my car right now and has been there for 3 yrs. Dried great, blocked out great, buffed great.
Still looks great.
Same goes for some NAPA epoxy primer.
flywheel Feb 4th, 03, 7:48 PM I realized one thing the other nite.Plastic filler goes on easier when it's at room temp than when it's been in a cold shop.Dahhh http://www.chevelles.com/forum/confused.gif

phocksphyre Feb 4th, 03, 8:59 PM Freezing will ruin Latex house paint, since it is water based. Should have no effect on other paints.

Dean Feb 4th, 03, 11:37 PM I've never noticed anything wrong with any paint, body filler or any other materials
even after freezing many times over
I do keep my antifreeze in the house so it dosen't freeze though
Rick, maybe you can talk Kelly into letting you take the microwave out there, should warm up filler real nice
flywheel Feb 5th, 03, 9:55 PM But would it make it stick any better,Dean?
