: Will this work?

I am planning of purchasing a 383 stroker off my buddy. The question I have is that i have 2.73 gears in the back. Can I still run this on these gears or will it not work... Money's kinda tight if i purchase the engine.
Any and all suggestions or opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks!!!

I wouldn't see why you couldn't run the same rear gears. Am i missing something? If you are using the same trans/driveshaft/rear end and just swapping the motor, i don't see where the issue could be. Sure a 4.11 or something would be quicker off the line and a little more fun.:D But yeah, it will work.

The 2.73 gears should work fine. With all of the low end torque of a 383, you should be able to come out of the hole pretty well. That sounds like a 10bolt, non-positraction rear, right? It will be easier to break the rear with that power upgrade. So, be careful. You can always upgrade later.

I would think that the most important consideration would be what size cam is currently in the motor. A 383 should be pretty torquey down low as long as it is not a really radical cam and should be okay with 2.73's but if the cam is really large it might be a dog.

Thanks for all the responses!!!
Yes it is a 10 bolt non- posi. As for the size of the cam in the 383 its 292I/292E .501I/.501E lift.
Is this too big? My friend says I need a stall with at least 2800, which I have...
Thanks!!

That is a failry big cam. What is the duration at .050? By the specs it sounds like a Comp Cams 292. If it is duration at .050 is 244 if I remember right. If that is the case I think the convertor is definitely needed and yes it would work with the 2.73 gears but might be a little soft on the bottom end. I think something around a 3.55 to a 3.73 would be better suited for best performance. Just my opinion. Hope it helps.

This is the Camshaft that I have in my 383. It gives me tons of bottom end and idles very nicely. I also have plenty of engine vacuum to operate my power disc brakes.

Magnum 292--Above poster is correct, 244 deg @.050....Youll need a converter for sure so it doesnt drag the motor down at a light..Gears will definitely make a difference. 3.73 or lower..

Great,
So I won't need a vaccuum canister to power my disc brakes?
Thanks again everybody!!!

Look at his cam specs closely. Your cam will not have those same manners as his cam is much smaller than what is currently in the engine you are thinking about buying. I would think the vacuum with the 292H would only be marginal and you might need a vacuum canister and the idle will definitely be rougher.
