My project 72 chevelle needs quarters for rust around the whellwells.my question is has anyone just lap welded the quarters insted of butt welds or flanged? I had a 71 ss that had quarters instaled that were lap welded below the bodyline ad it looked good.just trying to figure out the easyest way to do it myself as money is tight(last est.3500.00 to weld prime and undercoat)doesnt have to be perfect as it is going to be a driver. any advice appriciated.

ou812,
The most cost effective panel replacement is doing it yourself without having to weld at all. All you need to do is buy the replacement panel, cut out the rusted area, flange the panel or you could just overlap the panel - but will require more filler to make panel look right. Then, cut the replacement panel to size and use a metal panel bonding adhesive to bond the panel. I have used this procedure several times on rusted wheel wells on pickups on on a 72 chevelle. A company called Lord and 3M both sell the adhesives and they fully guarantee their product. Of course there are critics to gluing panels, but I know from experience and almost prefer them over welding as rust coming through the paint is less of a concern after 6-8 years. Here is a link to the product I use.

The best part about it is that if you do it right it requires virtually no body filler since there is no distortion to the panel.
