: Car show judging rant-------------
Carguy00 Sep 5th, 06, 10:27 PM I can't figure out this gig. I am talking about participant judging at local shows. I have a 72 SS that is restored to original, down to hoseclamps. We always put it in the originsl class. There is always a custom or street machine class for moded cars. Don't get me wrong, I have chromed and modded cars. The best we can ever do with this car is a 2nd. If we took it to an all Chevelle show I'm sure we could do better. Seems like I should take all the stock restored parts off and put them in a box and order $100 in chrom goodies and win 1st. What I am saying is, the stock class should be judged for that -- originality -- and how well restored or orignal the car is. Anyway I feel better now. Oh here are a couple pics of the car.

SS4Real Sep 5th, 06, 10:43 PM Don't give it a second thought. At most local shows, the modified cars will normally beat a dead stock Chevelle. The crowd and judges often look at the "wow" factor and hot rods and modifieds usually garner more votes, especally for "People's Choice." Just remember, when it comes time to sell, you will be the winner.
Carguy00 Sep 5th, 06, 10:46 PM Thanks, that is exactly my thoughts
1badss396 Sep 5th, 06, 10:53 PM Been their done it. Almost all local shows "participant judging" just done appreciate the real deal..
Its all about the cheap chrome:clonk:
BlueSS454 Sep 5th, 06, 10:55 PM Just remember, you always go home with the best prize, the car.
hpsherlin Sep 5th, 06, 11:05 PM You would probably do better where the judges know what "original" means. The crowd will go with the "bling" factor.
Good luck at the next show.

Andy69 Sep 6th, 06, 12:12 AM Even the shows with judges can be a crock. The last show I went to was an all years all makes show and a Honda del Sol with a rattle can engine bay job, where the guy didn't even bother to clean off the grease or mask anything, and another guy with a basically stock Saturn SL-2 both won trophies. I said next time I was bringing the minivan maybe I'd get 1st place too :clonk:
JimM Sep 6th, 06, 12:14 AM pretty typical, lotsa poeple like shiny stuff
Chris R Sep 6th, 06, 3:42 AM There are a few shows in our area where you will be docked if your in a stock class with any aftermarket equipment. A few judges I have talked to in the past are not swayed by a car that is not as stock as the truly correct car next to it and they make it known on thier clipboards.
Usually thier is only one participant winner so thats kind of out of anyones hands.
I bet it is the hideous yellow butt-splice on the passenger fender holding you out of 1st :D
Or the fact everyone knows your car is a clone as all SS's came with 454s :D
Participant judging is always subjective in local shows and people do go for shiny no matter if it is the stock class
You are correct that this:

Will get you that 1st place trophy :)
kevin d Sep 6th, 06, 6:26 AM Don't worry about the trophy. You have a beautiful car.
What color is the paint?
Around here with participant voting, whoever has the most friends there wins.

Flame Orange
depley Sep 6th, 06, 8:51 AM As I see it who cares about trophies? If I want one bad enough I can just go out an buy one. I shot archery for many years won hundreds of trophies, finally I decided to not take them any more and just take the plate off them, gave all my trophies away and let my local club recycle them for tournaments.
But the fellow who said he with the most friends at any given show wins......... since I don't know anyone I don't stand a chance, but then I still get to drive home in my 72 Sprint knowing its more rare than 99% of the cars that where there, and that I have less money in my car than most of them have in their paint jobs! And mine looks just as good as most. First time my father-in-law went to one of the shows with us he told me later he was suprised that my Sprint looked as good as almost every car their.

66 MYSTERY CHEVELLE Sep 6th, 06, 9:55 AM yep... dems Car Shows :clonk:
BB_Mike Sep 6th, 06, 10:08 AM There is a degree of preference involved in the type/model of car being shown.
I'd be more likely to vote for a less-retored limitted production car than a well-restored high production car. For example, a less restored 1969 'cuda with a 440-6pack motor and pistol grip shifter would do better than a small block SS chevelle with limited options.
Just an opinion. Now, the "degree" of resto is surely taken into account, but honestly the really great original resto's don't get acknowledged as that by the laman car enthusiast.
mr 4 speed Sep 6th, 06, 10:20 AM Just remember, you always go home with the best prize, the car.
I agree
You have one beautiful 72 SS!
mike69ss Sep 6th, 06, 12:32 PM Sounds typical. Most local judges will not know or appreciate a true stock resto. Don't let them get to you.
69boo307 Sep 6th, 06, 12:34 PM Screw car shows... I only go to 'cruise ins' now, nothign where there is so-called 'judging' taking place. With the exception of shows like Chevellebration, it's almost always BS.
Better to just go to a drive in where everyone is hanging out for a good time and showing off their rides, and noone is 'competing'.
Georgia69 Sep 6th, 06, 1:49 PM Dude, that is a stunning car. I wouldn't change one thing on it. Screw the car shows.

Thats what proper classing is for, the chome'ed-up crowd shouldn't be competing with you. The problem there is not the participant judging but the classes.
Around here with participant voting, whoever has the most friends there wins.
Here too, thats why there should be no same winner in consecutive years for annual shows that have participant judging.
We had discussed this topic at the CamAm show over several Canadian Beers. An idea that got slurred around was this:
(Participant or 'real' judges) what about "parent Classes" were the cars are grouped by apprasied value. 10k & under, 10,001-20K, etc.
Take the money out of the mix. People would have to compete with cars of simmilar value, not foolproof (for the ultra rare cars) but would make for better competition........yes, I know, I see the flame-ing coming;)
68chvlss396 Sep 6th, 06, 3:18 PM The way I see it is, that I go to the shows to hang out with other people that have the same interest as I do. Winning a trophy is just a bonus. I have won a few but it does not matter if I walk away with one or not. I don't go expecting to win! So I don't get upset if I don't. It kind of like my golf game. I set my expectations low, drink lot of beer and if all I wake up with is a hangover all is well. If you set you expectations to high, you might go to bed with Morgan Fairchild and wake up with Morgan Freeman.
Jesse66Original Sep 6th, 06, 3:35 PM Von has it correct, the good ole boy system is very much alive and well in the South. I had a 70 454SS with enough dirt in the trunk to grow potatoes and he beat me out hands down. It sucks but that is how it works. You have a beautiful car well detailed out.
Jesse
rocks66ss Sep 6th, 06, 3:46 PM At our Mid-America Regional in Olathe Ks, the participant judging was done with show participants only, no specatators, the judging was broke down by years 64-65-66-ect,ect, and there were only places for three cars on the judging sheet.
After the judging was tallyed, the top five cars were given awards. So far, I have yet to hear a complaint about the judging or the system used for participant judging. The judged cars, were judged on a 1000pt system, but to have your car judged, the entry fee was more. Like I said, I haven't heard any complaints.

Andy69 Sep 6th, 06, 3:47 PM go to bed with Morgan Fairchild and wake up with Morgan Freeman.
lmfao
For the spectator judged shows you also might try arriving early and parking near where they give out the ballots.
Participant judging really isn't real judging so I wouldn't worry about it.
Enter it in "original restored class" at an all Chevelle show that does have real judging and you will see a big difference.
You still might be disapointed to find out everything that's not exactly correct but at least you'll know what to work on.
Looks like a very nice job was done on it.

To really appreciate this you have know just how nice of a car Jesse actually has. It is a real pretty car!
OrrieG Sep 6th, 06, 5:10 PM I don't know if you read the thread about the Idaho cruise last weekend but there were a lot of people showing interest in an original 340 Cuda that had just came out of 18 years in storage. Paint was rough, some parts missing but those that know were drooling over a rust free unmolested example that could easily be restored. Personally I'll go for original over bling most of the time.
