I purchased my car with the quarters already installed. The problem is can you install outer wheelhouse with the quarter in the way.And how do you do it.I wish the guy spent the little bit extra to do it right ,but it seems alot of people cut corners to save a few bucks. The inners seem to be solid, the outers are rusted along the lip. Thanks Rick

I'm sure it can be done.. but might cost more, and be more of a pain too do! Someone here will have a more definitive answer.

I have a 68 myself and started redoing the body this past fall. So far I have hung some quarter skins and pieced in the outer wheelhouse. Since all that was rusted on my wheelhouse was in the lip area, I just replaced that section. As far as doing this with the 1/4 in place, good luck! I can not imagine how you could get the inner wheelhouse into place unless you cut it into many pieces, but I could be wrong.

Question on you car. I did not think L78 cars could have A/C, yet the photos of yours clearly shows it. Am I incorrect in my understanding?

Gary,My car did not come with a/c it was added from a donor car .I found a 68 that had air and cut the section out of the firewall so I could install it into my car.Had to have A/C it gets to hot with a black interior.I posted earlier about adding it,to find out why they did not have it in L78 cars.everyone that replied said it would work,so I put it in.Sharp eye though not to many people have noticed.

Ricky, I don't know how to find your previous post about "why" the L78's didn't have factory air, so someone else may have answered it in more detail, but with very few exceptions, Chevy didn't offer it with solid lifters, feeling that the extra RPM's the engines were capable of wouldn't be compatible, and also back then, AC wasn't the absolute necessity that it is today. Anyway, the only exception I know of off the top of my head is the mid 60's 327/365 Corvettes which were produced in some very small quantities with factory AC.

I made the mistake of welding one of my quarters skins on thinking I could later make repairs to the existing outer housing. I was wrong and had to later replace the outer wheel housing. I had the body off which made things easier but when it came time to do the other side I didn't make the same mistake. If your going to do it with the body on the car you might consider cutting the bad metal out and only using as much of the new outer housing as is necessary to replace what was rotted. You could cut it, flange it and weld it in. It won't be fun but can be done.

Gary U, did you cut that wheel lip area from a full outer wheelhouse, or is there a section sold for this purpose?
Thanks,
Rich

RT:

I purchased a pair of full outer wheelhouses and cut what I needed. I could not justify removing both the inner and outer just to replace the outer half. I basically made a horizontal seam about 3 inches up from the lip.

I did find a patch panel for the inner wheelhouse if anyone is interested. OPG makes them and I also purchased a pair. I needed a small section on both sides about the size of a playing card above the tailpipes. In hindsight, I may have been able to form this small section from flat sheet. These patches were rather large, and the quality was not nearly as good as the outers I bought (NPD). To make matters worse, the patches were quite expensive and the shipping was expensive from OPG as well (oversized box B.S.).
