: Repro SS hood
Has anyone installed a repro SS hood?
I'd like to pick one up at Carlisle this weekend. Any problems with them? I'm priming a deck lid I bought there that was made by Dynacorn (sold by Ausleys, made in China). So far, the fit looks good, although I am having to take care of some waviness. How about Goodmark?
Thanks for any help on this,
Rich
SS_Dave Apr 21st, 04, 11:58 AM I am in the process right now.
It is a Gooodmark hood.
Here is what I have found.
1. Hood contour was high accross the front.
With both the hood jacks holding the corners even with the fenders, the center was up 3/4 of an inch. MARTINSR told me how to fix this. Wooden blocks in the corners and press the center down, bending the hood until you get the right fit.
This worked fine, except it forced two little depressions on either side of the center crease that I had to fill. That caused me problems Sunday during paint. Seems they were deeper than I thought. another story.
2. The drivers side of the hood was formed with more of an arc than the passengers side. I attempted the same maneuver on the edge of the hood. This proceeded to put low spots on the edge of the hood from the palms of my hand. Never did get it to "conform". Got the low places fixed ok though. Nice and flat after blocking out.
I found out the reason it was bent here when I sprayed the underside. Seems the frame rail on that side has a crease in it, like the hood fell or was mashed or bent and creased there. I am going to try and pull the crease, which should allow the hood to return to its intened form.

Otherwise, the hood looks great, so far.
I am in the process of repainting now.
I am not suggesting you don't by a Goodmark, just relaying my experience.
Dave
Thanks for the quick response Dave.
I'm sitting on the fence here, b/c the original hood had some surface rust, I had it sandblasted and they warped it. I shrunk most of the low spots out and have filled most of what needs it. The L/S of this hood had some pin holes of rust which I didn't trust, so I cut a section out and can butt weld in a patch. Now if I have to do the amount of work you describe on a "new" hood, I'm gonna be fit to be tied!
Thanks again,
Rich

It has the "step" in the frame where the hinge
mounts. Goodmark points this out and mentions you need 69 hinges if you are going to use it on a 68.
I don't know if it would work on a 67 or not.
I put the final coat of base color on it last night. Came out pretty good. Won't have to block much before clear. Just enough to get a good surface for the clear to stick.
Ran out of paint on the last pass. Close!
White stripes next. ( I know, that makes some of you sick, but I like em. )
Then blue pearl, then clear, then buff.
MAXX2 Apr 22nd, 04, 9:06 AM Bought ours from Dick at True Connections. It fit perfect, and was painted 2 months ago. It looks perfect. Absolutely no adjustments in the sheetmetal were required.
He discounted it $50.00 because it had a very slight dent in the very front center hump.
Here's a picture when it was in primer.

Hope this helps.

OK, that sounds better.
Dave, maybe that hood had some bad handling before you got it, but I'm glad you were able to get around the problems.
I think for the amount of work my old hood needs, I'm better off replacing it.
Thanks,
Rich
Update: I picked up a repro hood at Carlisle on saturday, looks great in the box! I'll be dry fitting everything to make sure of the fit this week.
Incidentally, I spoke with one of the guys at a supplier at Carlisle, he told me there is only one mfgr for these '69 hoods. Some parts are made by different mfgrs, but not this hood, so no matter who you buy it from, they're all made in the same factory. Makes sense to me since there are only so many customers for this which would tend to discourage another mfgr. from going through the trouble of tooling up for it.
Thanks for the responses.
Incidentally, I've added a URL for my site which has a few pics. of the work I'm doing on this car (currently just the 1/4 panel work). I hope it works.
