I have a 870 Street Avenger that's about 4 months old. Took the fuel bowls off last weekend and found that the metal on the inside of the bowls was flaking off (some plating I guess). I called Holley and described the problem to a tech. He said he hadn't seen anything like that before and that the engineering dep't. needed to see it. I figured I would have to return mine first, but he put a new carb on UPS that day with a return label for the one I had. Two days later, I was in business again with a brand-new carb!! Thanks, Holley!

Thats the way customer service should be but it's a shame that it's such a big deal when ever you actually get good service which should be the norm but usually isn't.

Glad it worked out good for you and thats some good press for Holley too.

It's great that they sent you a new carb, but the "we haven't seen this before" is BS unless the guy has been on vacation the last 3 months. Several member on the 'vette forum had this happen and Shane @ Holley posted the date ranges that had the problem for easy ID. He said a sub-contractor had problems with the plating process for a while.

For reference, here are the posts by Holley from the corvette forum:

Corvette Enthusiasts,

Holley Performance Products always strives to deliver the highest quality performance parts and accessories to our customers. We recently discovered that some of our zinc carburetor parts (primarily fuel bowls and to a lesser degree metering blocks and main bodies) are exhibiting an unusual level of corrosion on their interior surfaces. We have traced the cause back to a zinc alloy material that did not meet our specifications. The issue has been corrected at the vendor and we are now receiving certified material.

To date, only a few carburetors have been brought to our attention exhibiting this unusual corrosion. Carburetors within the following date code ranges may be affected: 0016 – 1986 and 3345 – 3655. Carburetors with date codes that do not fall within these ranges are not affected. The date code is stamped into the front of the airhorn by the choke butterfly (see http://www.holley.com/TechService/ListNumber.asp for photos of date code locations). If you need help determining if your carb is affected or if your carb is exhibiting internal corrosion, please call Holley Tech Service toll free at 1-866-GOHOLLEY.

Holley is committed to top quality and we will stand behind our products. Carburetors or carb components (depending on the issue and your preference) that we determine to have been affected by this issue will be replaced free of charge. We regret any inconvenience this may cause you and, as always, we thank you for choosing Holley for your performance carburetor needs.

Sincerely
Shane Weckerly

Corvette Enthusiasts,
Let me explain the build date coding a little better. Most of you have nothing to worry about:

Date codes marked 0016 – 1986:
(built from January 1st of 2006 (001) through the 198th day of 2006 (July 17th)

Date codes marked 3345 – 3655
(built from December 1st of 2005 (334th day) through December 31st of 2005

The date code has nothing to do with the quantity built. It's just the date the carb was manufacutured at our plant.

Bob Onit, your carb is not affected (0614 is the 61st day of 2004)

Muddywaters, your new carb could be affected since is was manufactured January 11th, 2006. Pull your bowls and check it out to be safe. Call tech if you have any questions.

ljthe2nd, your carb is not affected. (1175 is 117th day of 2005)

77vetteuk, your carb is not affected (0965 is 96th day of 2005)

72Tornado, your carb is not affected (3464 is the 346th day of 2004)

Please keep in mind that we expect very few carbs built in this date range will ever experience a problem. Pulling the bowls for a quick inspection will tell you.

Al77Vette: this potentially could affect other versions of Holley carbs manufactured with these date codes.

Thanks

Thanks for the update, Marcus. You know, I wondered about that. Didn't seem logical that I was the only one with the problem and I thought he was awfully quick to take care of it. (It wasn't Shane I talked to, by the way.)

Nevertheless, it is still great that they take care of a problem so quickly and without hassle. I wish all companies had such good service.

70ELKYSS: Yep. Don't get me wrong: I really like Holley and have met Shane and Doug Flynn in person as well as toured the plant. Great company & people. Just a little disappointed that they did the "you're the only one" thing.

OK I just got off the phone with Holley tech and I have a Street Avenger that is in the date code of the ones listed above NIB. He told me that I have to put it on and wait for it to flake before I can return it. I asked him that means when it flakes and plugs a jet and leans out he is going to buy new pistons/shortblock too?? Yea right!

Where is all this great customer service that is promised?? I have been a Holley user for over 30 years, none others. Time to go shopping elsewhere? Was not impressed by his arrogance at all!!!!

Just because it was in the range of dates, doesn't mean you will have a problem with it. I had a 670 on my sbc for over a year and it did not have a problem.

Ray, was the date code on your 4 month old carb within the affected range?
Or is this happening again?
