I have friend who is restoring a 300 Deluxe SS and he has some finish ?'s

1. Rear cove panel- body color or black?
2. Metal part of dash- same thing
3. Master cylinder- natural or black?
4. Any other things he needs to know about in order to do it "right".
This car is a #'s matching L-78 and he is trying to do everything possible to get it back to original. (I'm trying to get him to get into TC as well)
TIA for the help.

Duke, 1.Semi-gloss black 2. Semi-gloss black (flat black between the dash pad and windshield) 3. Either natural or flat black (I would go with natural to be sure) 4. The exterior of 300 Deluxe SS's is virtually the same as Malibu SS's with the exception of hideaway wipers being an option instead of std and the middle bar of the grille being painted instead of a bright molding. The interior is the main difference, with vinyl floor covering instead of carpet, and different seat upholstery, door panels, and headliner pattern. The bucket seat and console options are not available on a 300 Deluxe SS, bench only.

Von,

Thanks for the reply. Your car looks beautiful, at least what I can see in the "member feature" area. My buddy's interior is kind of rough, esp. in the front seat area. The rear is saveable (I think). Right now, the focus is on the body and paint work. I probably will be back to you for more info. Thanks again!

Duke, Is your buddy's car a post sedan or hardtop? What color? As far as interior items go, you can get the 300 deluxe basketweave headliner from Year One and you can get a reasonable facsimile of the vinyl floor covering from ACC (Auto Custom Carpet). But we're S.O.L. on seat upholstery and door panels. Nobody repros it. Finding nice ones in a scrapyard would be very difficult.

Duke:
My car is not very original, and Von knows a lot about this stuff (lot more than I do http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif). Another guy that is quite knowledgable in 300s is Don Lightfoot.

I agree with all that Von said. Something to add, 300s had short sun visors. Malibus had long ones that clipped into the rv mirror base.
Also, I think? that power steering was an option on SS 300s, but was standard on malibu SSs.
Von can you say for sure??
I also think that Astro ventilation was only on sport coupes (hardtops).

If any of you are interested I have a 300 delux 68 for sale. All I haveis the body and black interior only and all the glass. It is too nice to go to the crusher but would be some work to restore. Let me know if you are interested. It is in the "for sale" section as well.

Just a couple of things to add. Power steering was not standard equipment on the SS cars. Our steering is by Arm Strong. SMS Auto Fabrics in Portland, Oregon has the black basket weave vinyl for the all vinyl seats. We bought enough to repair our seats, which should be back shortly. SMS may have the seat material for the cloth/vinyl seats. Good door panels are virtually impossible to find. We were lucky in that respect. Over half of the 300 Deluxe SS396 cars that I have information on are L78 powered.

His car is a hardtop and the color is Olympic Gold. It is in the paint shop as we speak. Speaking of paint, what did you do on the bottom of the floor pan for color-body color or some shade of semi or flat black? I'm sure more questions will come along real soon.
Thanks to all for your replys. Got to get this guy signed up. So much good stuff and info. here!

Duke. Thanks, That will be a really sharp combo. I painted the bottom of my floor pan semi-gloss black. I've heard that that and dark gray was what the factory used.

Gee, a guy goes out of town for a few days and comes back to a nice thread on the 300's http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif.

DUKE - you've got some very good advice here from the 300 crowd - Von, Ron & Keith. They've covered a lot of the unique stuff applicable to these devils. After reading down the thread I was kind of hoping this would end up to be a post car, oh well http://www.chevelles.com/forum/frown.gif

One other item which was covered in here a few months ago was in regard to the center horizontal grill molding. It was the general consensus by the experts in here that this was the only exterior difference between the Malibu SS's and the 300 SS's. Apparently the 300's did not get them. I think you will find that most of the 300 SS's out there have this molding (mine included) just because it looks better.

I look forward to following this car in the future DUKE, keep us posted. Also, make sure he joins TC and fill him in on our CanAm Club as well.

OK guys, so far so good with all your help. Now here is another question (I,m going to start charging my buddy by the hour for all this consultation!)
The grille on his car is a Malibu style, not the usual 300 style. Is this normal due to the SS pkg. and if so, what about the holes for the center, horizontal molding? If you just paint it, the holes will show. Or, are you talking about the 300 grille, w/o any type of molding. Gee, now even I'm starting to get confused. Damn cars anyway. I get mine done (mostly) and I just can't stay away from another guy's project.
TIA. Duke

Duke, This is where you (he) are in luck. For some strange reason the only new grilles readily available now from GM and the resto parts houses are the 300 Deluxe type. They have a painted raised center bar with no holes and aren't intended to receive a chrome center molding. Some people drill the holes and install one anyway but it doesn't look quite right. Most 300 Deluxe SS's I've seen including mine and Don's, have a Malibu type grille and molding now because someone evidently installed one in the past. And they just plain look better. I wouldn't be surprised either if some 300 Deluxe SS's in '69 made it out the door with Malibu grilles.

Von,
Thanks again, for the info. I found out the hard way about the grille that is avail. now and ended up with the wrong one for my car (Malibu). However, I kept it and so someone I know might just get lucky! I really have no need to keep it anyway. I've had it for quite a few yrs. now and always wondered what I could do with it. Don't throw anything away, you just might need it some day. I'll try to keep you 300 guys posted on progress, at least until I can get my friend Rob, to join this crazy bunch here at TC.
