: Bought a Abrasive blaster... WOW!

This is the best value tool I have ever bought I think! I found the 40 pound pressurized system from HarborFreight on sale for $79.00 and 30 grit quartz sand for about $5.00 a bag at Home Depot. After spending many years sanding and cleaning car parts before painting it is nothing short of amazing how fast this blaster cleans things. If you have a air compressor that can get you 5.5 to 6 cubic feet of air at 90 pounds pressure, I stongly recommend this tool!

Redrum,
I got the same blaster. Same price too. I've been blasting my Ford 640 tractor with it. I paid $60 to have the front end sheet metal blasted. Then ran across this deal. I go to the cement place and get a yard of their mortar sand put on my truck for about $18 then screen it through the red funnel into the tank. If you blast with a tarp underneath you can sweep it, screen it and reuse alot of sand. I store the sand in an old kids pool. I bought 50 pounds baking soda today, gonna try to blast my dash. Thats why I was askin' alot questions in my other post. Oh, do yourself a favor and get a good face shield and mask. Have fun !

Sand Blasters are great. I've had one for a long time and used it to do the frame on the '72...3 times... They work great but you will be finding sand in places you'd never have dreamed of http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif and they are hell on your air compressor. Good luck and happy blasting http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Hey Guys . . . I have one of those that I purchased a few months ago. My problem is finding the media to use, my Home Depot trip only turned up with "General Sand" which clogged the tip, so I have been using the expen$ive alum oxide available at Harbor Freight. I'll have to try Chris' method of mortar sand.

CranberryRed,
I just fold a piece of window screen over the top of the funnel and zip tie it. Saves alot of clogs and wasted time.

The Home Depot here has the white sand in 90 pound bags. It is the kind they use in cigarette stands and is already screened to 30 grit.

I bought one of those about 3 years ago when they were $129.00. I've only used it 3 times because I can't get it to shoot a consistently steady stream of sand, It either shoots out like a water hose (no pressure) or it sputters. Any suggestions. I've had better luck with the pistol and bucket version.

66Super,
Make sure all sand is dry. I always screen my sand also. On the pressurized harbor freight model there is a lever valve on the bottom that the blasting hose is connected too. This controls the amount of abrasive that is released. The more open the valve is, the more abrasive released and less air. I blast with mine probably a little less than half open. Just have to play with it a little. You'll know when it's right. Hope this helps.

Do you HAVE TO HAVE a compressor or will this unit alone work by itself? I don't have a compressor, but would love something small and be able to clean small areas.

That white sand sounds like the stuff they put in swimming pool filters. If it is the same and you can't find it at the local home center you might check a pool supply store.

Yes, a big compressor is needed. You need at least 5.5 cubic feet at 90 pounds to run the blaster well.

SS396, Stay away from the Backing soda, I have seen horable paint failures from using it. It embeds into the surface and NOTHING will stick to it.

Ok, I made 70 bucks today, and im lookin at ordering that sandblaster. Gonna use it mainly for sheetmetal, so what would be a good media to use so as not to warp the metal? Ive been told that some real fine sand will not damage it, but what grit, and will a place like home depot sell it? Thanks...

I drove down to Phoenix (185 miles) to get mine. I printed out the sale offer from the internet and got down to Harbor Freight and they wanted $89.95. I showed them the printout and they honored that price. So if any of go to the retail stores take the internet prices with you, it could save you money. Man I was like a kid in a candy store, I had to stop before I had bought everything I "needed". http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif I'll make a return trip next month and get the rest. It is easier to resist buying when on the computer, but when you can touch the parts washers and the welders and grinders and .....well you know. http://www.chevelles.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Just recently purchased my sandblaster from Sears($50). I opted for that partly because I can get replacement ceramic nozzles. Don't think I can get them through Harbor Freight. I'm lucky, got a Harbor Freight store 20 minutes from me, Sears is 10. I bought a 100lb bag of 'Paragon Industrial 30' for 5 bucks. Cleaned my whole front suspension today, works awesome. Two things you MUST have. Respirator and a face sheild. Read the warning labels if you use silica sand.

3.2 MM ceramic nozzles are available in packs of ten from Harbor Freight for about $13.00. That is the size needed for most compressors up to 6 HP and is slow enough to keep from heating metal if you keep moving the nozzle.
