Ok, I'm trying to do as much work as I can to keep the cost down. I'm building a daily driver so It doesn't need to be show quality. My question is can I use spray can primer over top of the putty without causing a problem when I get it painted. I need to put something down so I can tell if the panels are straight or not. The car is in the garage and won't be outside. My plans are to do all the body work and take it to someone to shot the paint. I own a nice compressor but don't feel like I can handle all of the prep work that goes with painting, like how to mix the paint, and how much pressure to use. I'm thinking about taking it to maaco and getting them to paint it.

Be very careful with the spray can primers. Most of them are incompatible with "real" automotive finishes and can cause problems such as fisheyes, lifting, etc. You would be better off buying a gallon of PPG or Dupont primer and shooting it yourself. Talk to the guys at your local auto paint supply store. They can set you up with the proper primer for your situation. You can still have someone else shoot the "color coat", but at least your prep will have been done properly..by you! Just stay away from the spray cans!
