: Trunk Spatter Paint - clearcoat?

I'm repainting the trunk in my '72, using rattle-cans. I was told the best paint to get was the GM spatter, which I bought. Can I use any brand of clear to top it? As far as I know, there is no GM clear available in a rattle-can. I was looking at my local parts store, and they have Plasti-Cote Clear for trunk paint (to go with their brand spatter)- anyone know if this combo will work? I'd hate to do the job and then discover the clear isn't compatible. While I'm at it, regarding engine paint (again in rattle cans), anyone have a preference between VHT or Plasti-Cote engine paint - and should I prime it? I've never primed engines before, and haven't had any real problems, but I'm curious if I should be priming.

Bill, I cannot comment on Rattle can clear cuz I don't use them anymore but I would think any brand should work. Test a small semi-concealed area and let it sit overnight. I really doubt you will have problems.

As far as VHT vs Plasti-coat, in my opinion there is no comparison. VHT goes on my nicer and uses more solids for better coverage. I have put on 1/2 dozen coats of Plasti-coat and still had bleed thru.

As far as spray bomb primers go, I use them only for a uniform base to hide bleed thru and really don't get any better adhesion using it. The best advise is to MAKE SURE THE ENGINE IS ABSOLUTELY cleanand use thin coats.

I only use spray gun epoxy paints now as they do not discolor with heat, age and chemicals.

Bill, You did not mention weather the trunk coating is for protection or restoration/show. If the former I'll do some more checking, if the latter it would not be correct to clear it as it would be to shiny. I can not say on your two choices of engine paint as I have not used them, I use Dupli- Color #DE1620 on two daily drivers and my resto. Chevelle, with excellent success and have not primed any of these, but try to get them as clean as possible. Hope this helps some. Brad

My resto is not a concours type resto, just a clean, well detailed driver; with a few shows here and there for kicks. Thanks for your help, guys - any more info welcomed http://www.chevelles.com/forum/smile.gif

Just to add one thing to the good points raised above. As far as the "clear coat" is concerned, you want a flat or satin clear and not the glossy. The one your parts store recommended would probably suffice if it is not glossy. The last time I did mine I used "Krylon" Clear Matte Finish, spray can #47120, which gave the desired finish.

Good luck.

Ditto to what Don said about the Satin clear.
