: The El Camino is Ready for the Track: Pics
Motorhead62 Sep 1st, 06, 7:04 PM Well guys I have been prepping the El Camino for a little strip duty tonight. The best I ran at Denton was a 9 flat at 80 with zero traction, lots of wheel spin and a hopeless 60 ft.
Since then I exploded the 10-bolt rearend, installed the 12-bolt from my Chevelle and then today I boted on the Welds with the sticky MT Drag Radials. I hope to bust off a seven in the 1/8th. I will follow up the post with the results. Here is a pic from earlier today. :D

Well,...if it runs as good as the motor looks, you will be fine:thumbsup:
Good luck, be safe, have fun.
chevguy65 Sep 1st, 06, 7:18 PM Looks good, and I agree with epistuff, that is a fine looking motor.....how about some specs on it.

chris454ss1970 Sep 1st, 06, 8:24 PM Chris, have fun at Denton. The rides looking good. I'm fixing to pull the motor out of my bucket. I think I spun a bearing, won't know till I tear it down. Is there another get together at Denton or you going for the heck of it? Later
chevguy65 Sep 1st, 06, 8:38 PM Nice specs on the motor!!!!!!
Very Impressive......
I may be talking to you when I am ready to build......that will be after my lawsuit and when I actually get money out of a judgement.
DragRacer Sep 1st, 06, 9:28 PM Chris,
I wished I would have seen this earlier. If you are driving down to Denton - DON'T if you haven't left yet.
Their timing equipment was struck by lightening last week during the storms and they are closed this weekend.
I was planning on going tonight as well.

Motorhead62 Sep 2nd, 06, 12:36 AM Hey Guys,
I went to Wichita Raceway Park, our local track. The weather was a little funky. We had to stop for the rain once but then all was well for the most part.
Once again I was humbled by the track.
You know how it goes. My best of three runs neted the following:
.952.........Reaction
1.9075......60 FT
5.6712......330 FT
8.7280......1/8 ET
79.03........MPH
YUK! :clonk:
I ran 9.0 @ 81 at Denton in 103 degree weather with zero traction. I thought for sure I could run better than that. I could not cut a light to save my life and the El Camino just did not seem to run as smooth tonight, sticky, heavy air I guess. Everyone was off tonight and having problems, even the guys running alcohol.
I miss not having my Chevelle in one piece. The Chevelle has electric fans and I can cool the car down between rounds. And, I can cut a mean light in my 'Velle.
I did have fun hanging out with the boys and watching the other cars run. I guess all in all, it still is not bad for a daily driver. :D
Motorhead62 Sep 2nd, 06, 12:41 AM Huh? 27+ on the highway?? HOW????
Efficient combustion, roller cam and the over drive. At 70 MPH my truck turns about 1900 RPM. I have actually gotten as much as 31 MPG once, that was at night doing about 65 MPH and 1600 RPM. :D

Wow,..my Subaru get 28 MPG. I could be driving an ElCamino:D
That is very impressive!
Bob West Sep 2nd, 06, 12:54 AM Mine only gets 7mpg and runs 6.70's in the 1/8th, need to trade it in on a newer model I guess :D

Chris,
Glad to see the Elky back running. Those wheels and tires are killer. Those back tires look like they were made special to fit the rear wheel wells. Maybe the set up will bring you better times at Denton next month. Every time I see a picture of that motor I think how nice that would look sitting under the hood of my car. Next year for the stroker for sure. I still can't get over how quiet and tame the car sounds.

forcd ind Sep 2nd, 06, 8:24 AM nice clean piece-seems like a pretty well planned out setup-gotta be pretty cool running hwy speeds and low rpm's-one day im gonna build the 4l80e i have, swap out the low first gear turbo 400, enjoy driving again-lol
Motorhead62 Sep 2nd, 06, 10:47 PM Thanks for the nice comments guys.
I want to run the El Camino with the regular street tires now and see if a little wheel spin will give me some better times.
I don't know, it's worth a shot.
Frank, those are the same wheels I had on my Chevelle. LOL
sschevellefan Sep 3rd, 06, 12:52 AM what size are the tires? what wheels and offset? They look good on the elky. If I can`t sell mine I`m going to make it a hotrod instead of a driver like I originally planned.
asbill71 Sep 3rd, 06, 1:01 AM Yes please post wheel & tire combo
Bomber '67 Sep 3rd, 06, 9:52 AM I always like El Camino projects!
Do you have any plans to run the car on a chassis dyno? Weather issues aside, your mph suggests the same horsepower as before - maybe some tuning would really wake that 388 up.
At 27 to 31 mpg I'm going to have to call it "odometer error". What is your tire height, maybe 26" or 28"? With a 26" tire and 3.08 gears that will get you ~ 68 mph at 1,900 in fourth overdrive with the converter in lock up. With a 28" tire and 3.23 gears that nets you ~ 70 mph.

Thomas,
Your right about the tuning. The carb is an out of the box 750 Edelbrock, not good for HP but great for a daily driver. Maybe I should bolt on a Holley and try that. I would run my Elky on a chassis dyno here but our local facility is not user friendly.
The drive train is 3.31-1 gears now (used to be 3.36-1), 275/60-15's at about 28.5 tall and speedo is a little off. But I promise you it gets awesome highway mileage and crappy city milealge. :D
Yes please post wheel & tire combo
I will measure the rear wheel back space when I pull the wheels back off. For now they are 15 x 8's on the rear with 275/60-15 MT drag radials, fronts are 15 x 3 1/2 with 165-15 metric radials, Volkswagon tires.
Wohoo, nice burn out!!! My Elky used to be all white

See above, LOL!
Bomber '67 Sep 4th, 06, 2:34 AM I'm glad you are happy with the mileage, but I'll still go with odometer error - I think it is probably reading miles too quickly. This is super easy to check, simply watch the mile markers on the highway over a number of miles. Overdrive transmissions do help, but they can't double the mileage. Maybe I'm just envious: my '65 gets 10 to 11 mpg highway in overdrive locked up - which I think it good for a 4.10:1 geared thumping 496 :)
Depending on the brand your 275/60 - 15 tires should be almost exactly 28" in true diameter. With 3.31 gears and in overdrive lock up 1,900 rpm gets 68 mph on the nose.
Too bad your local chassis dyno facility is not friendly - what did you ever do to them? Travel to the next city with a quality chassis dyno, it will be time and money well spent.
