Hi, I have a '71 chevelle that had a factory 307. The timing chain broke, and the engine was toasted. I have since replace it with a crate 350. Now I would like to rebuild the original 307 with my son who is 11, and hopefully be able to put the motor in the car when he turns 16 so he can drive it. Does anyone have any tips on high performance parts for the 307 that will allow it to develop the most horse power, and torque possible. I am not that familiar with crank/cam/piston/intake combinations that are the best suited for one another. Any tips or part numbers, or any information on sources of info would be greatly appreciated.

Why dont you want to keep the crate 350 ?

Just order one of those rebuild kits from someone like northern auto comes with everything. great learning tool for about 250 bucks just bore it hang the pistons have the cam bearing installed and a valve job and your done. save the torque build up for the 350. jim

I had a matching numbers 307 with a bad set of heads, needing a total rebuild. I bought a kit with flat top pistons from Northern. Nice kit but far from HiPo. I upgraded to a comp cam, paid good $$ for Total Seal gapless piston rings (Summit). Absolutely no blow-by with these rings, period. I bought a set of 2.02/1.60 World Products small chamber heads bare castings for compression and flow (from Summit-shipping was the difference maker in where I ordered- $8.99). You're talking low compression with flattops unless you close up the chamber size. Manley upgrade on the valves, used Z-28 valve springs from Midwest Motorsports. I used these springs on a circle track car @ 6500 rpm's with no problems. Melling HV oil pump- I won't use anything else, short of a dry sump system unnecessary for the street. Bought a Holley Street Dominator hi rise aluminum intake and a 4150 double pumper 650cfm carb. Love Edelbrock- but will never use anything but Holley in carburetors! Bought Summit $79.95 headers and Jegs A-body 2 1/2" dual exhaust kit but didn't see how the tailpipes could work. Will have a local muffler shop finish them to my tastes from the mufflers on back. Moroso Blue Max 8mm wires are a must. Trying Crane Cam's electronic conversion kit for old school distributor look but modern internals. Aluminum $65 water pump from Midwest or Speedway, A1 on eBay for a 4 row copper big block radiator. End result- good running streetable screamer!
