nolimitpkr Sep 1st, 06, 1:46 AM Yes it should have a 14 bolt in it. That truck is my ultimate dream vehicle. It probably has a th400 in it also. Should have 454 emblem on the valve cover, ect.. My best friend had one and we raced his neighbor often who had a stock 95 impala ss. We would take the Impala out of the hole and could hold them off until about 60mph, and then we would get passed like we were standing still. Just my two cents. They have good torque but start to choke at higher rpms, in my opinion. I say go for it,
travis g Sep 1st, 06, 5:53 AM I believe they was 230hp, 385ft-lbs, at very low rpms. On top of that they came with a TH400 and 3.73's. Very torquey, but run out of steam very fast. It was the exact same engine that came in 1 ton duallys. Compression is only about 7.8-1, with a tiny cam. A buddy of mine had one in high school (they came out my senior year)...it sounded and looked tough but I spanked it pretty bad with my old '69 chevy 1/2 ton with a smogger 350 with just a cam and dual exhaust. Later he put a set of headers, real dual exhaust, and a mild cam in it and it felt like it added 100hp. I also remember it only got like 10mpg. It did look good though.

Not true! There were Red and White ones also FYI although they are seldom seen. The 14-bolt rear has a 10.5" ring gear and is commonly found in 1-ton light duty trucks - The 454 SS has a 9.5" ring gear - another FYI.
mr 4 speed Sep 1st, 06, 7:04 AM The 1990 models will have a TH400,3.73's and have a lock up torque convertor
They are pretty cool trucks
Busted Knuckles Sep 1st, 06, 7:39 AM Heads should be your first concern - you have peanut ports. You can get an adapter for an intake with large ovals so you can run the throttle body on it, get some big oval port heads, preferrably closed chamber to bump the compression, and get a custom chip burned for it, and headers. That'll wake it up for sure!
Alwhite00 Sep 1st, 06, 8:49 AM In 1990 (first year) they were only available in black. Later years had different colors available. Funniest thing about Chevys "muscle truck" is it did not even come with a tach in it in 90. WTF?

GM PARTS1 Sep 1st, 06, 10:08 AM Look for "B4U" opt. in the glove box option label. If in ain't there it's fake.
69boo307 Sep 1st, 06, 12:09 PM Cool trucks, but they're complete dogs. If you got some good heads/cam, and got rid of the TBI though, you could get it rolling pretty good.
540Hotrod Sep 1st, 06, 3:47 PM Back when they were pretty new, there was one in Houston with a set of Iron Merlin oval ports, cam, headers etc. Ran high 11's on motor!!
Surprised lots of folks.

Go to the transmission forum and ask Wally, the moderator. He had one for a while.
chevelle1971_350 Sep 1st, 06, 7:20 PM Guys Thank you all for the info.
Thanks agine. ill post pictures when i get it.
Chevelle_509 Sep 1st, 06, 10:13 PM I bought a '92 Silverado 3500 a few months ago. Same motor as the SS's, with a 4L8E (or is it 4L80?...I forget, 4 spd auto.) trans, & 4.10 gears. What those before have said is correct (as far as I've read elsewhere). 230 hp, 385 lbs torque.
Mine has dual exhaust, and I took out the snorkel after I bot it, and it felt like it added 15 hp. Mine is in no way fast, but plenty of torque, and is built like a tank (being that it's a 3500), and simply does not feel like it's got anywhere near 160K miles. Feels more like about 50K original miles...runs perfect, feels extremely solid, and smooth on the freeway.
RandarCole Sep 2nd, 06, 12:36 AM I owned one of these for a few years. It's one of those you wish you could have back. It was great for stop light to stop light, but top end wasn't that great. Terrible gas mileage, but who buys a 454 expecting good mileage. Highway driving wasn't it's strong suit either, 3.73's with short tires. But it was a BLAST to drive and would go through back tires like nothin' if you weren't careful.
One interesting thing I remember if you put the truck in "low 1" and floored it, the transmission would shift into 2nd without you moving the gear shifter (previous owner showed me) and would shift very firmly (usually chirping the tires). Ahh...fond memories....

I believe all T-400s had a shift over-ride! Maybe at diff settings?
In my old 74, I would put it in 1st at the track & just leave it there. It would shift at preciselly 6500rpm every time...1-2 & 2-3 .
