To start off with I am a 4 speed guy, My first 700 in my 70 wagon blew it up in 2 hrs. Why? T-V Cable was not hooked up. Visited Stans tranny Shop in McKeesport Pa. Explained what I wanted, He said you need a 700 from a Vette---Z-28---Chevy 2WD pick up. Why? They look the same but they are different. So $900.00 Later I am good to go this was 5 years ago. And the loc up unit I used is from T.P.I. Performance South Chicago Hites 60411 Ill.706-755-9100. $83.00 Shipped to my house. NOTE The tranny guy said all 700R4s are not the same, Get the right one, some 700s are for around 200 H.P. and low torque engines. Some are able to handle more torque and H.P.I guess 700s are like small blocks they look alike. Mine has been in for 5 years and has a cable speedo drive. Again I know nothing about 700R4s. other than very small leak at the shifter on the tranny ,no problems in five years.Put about 3-5000 miles a year on it and I go down the strip now and then. I am happy with the LS5-700R4 combo. Bob ACES 2825 70 SS454 M-22 Camino org. ownr. 70 SS 454 RED sta wgn.

The TV cable adjust the line pressure. Insufficient line pressure allows a lot of clutch slippage and causes early failure.

Earlier 700s had lower input shaft spline count along with some other internal differences and are considered less durable. The transition to the later, "better" style was in or around 1987 or '88 (look at a torque converter application chart and you'll notice two different groups of applications by year).

Corvettes had different parts to allow full throttle upshift to overdrive, maybe some Z-28's too, not sure. But these are commonly available for upgrade.
