i just installed my new 496 onto my 67 ss chevelle bare frame and came across a problem with the #6 cylinder header tube. The tube is in the way of my stock power steering linakage rod are there any thoughts or rigs like a certain off set or universal rag jump that would cure this problem. Note the headers are jet hot coated and i'm not going to dent them to make this work any ideas please help thanks jim

Changing the rag joint won't help and you won't clear enough moving the steering wheel to the left, I had the same problem, it was either dent the header tub or return them. I choose to dent them and keep the 2" primaries and mine where also coated. I used a 1" long socket placed it where i marked and hit it with a hammer it made a nice clean dimple and it didn't damage the coating at all.

I asked the same question in another way recently. One individual (Bad Rat 414) on here stated that he used Moroso solid motor mounts on his BB and had no problems getting 2 inch primary Hedmans to fit fine on a 67. Might think about tall vs short motor mounts.

Here's the link with a pic:

Both me and my son run Hooker Jet Coated 2 inch primaries and we both had a slight rub on the steering shaft, I used the socket and hammer method on both and it gave us the clearance and did not crack the coating. I tried the Hedman 2 inch before the hookers and the right side would not fit without major grinding of the frame, the hookers fit best except for the steering shaft.

PS. by the way it is the #5 tube not the # 6 as stated.

Have to dent them. Tried to shift/angle the column a hair over at the pump and at the firewall, but not close to enough to make a difference.

Carefull dent is the only way I was able to clear them.

Hey guys i'm doing the same as we speak, can i cut off the rag joint and install a borgenson swivel like we use in the racecar steering shafts? Ralph

That still won't change the steering rod center, The only other option would be to shim the steering box in the front only.

i have done as sug., many times b4, i shimmed the steering box just a hair and moved the shaft just enough to clear the tube-you can also loosen the bolts under the dash and move the column over a little to the outside to help
i was a little confused how the #6 tube hit the steering also-right hand drive?
