: The forgotten 69 Chevelle
Mr69 Aug 29th, 06, 7:39 PM 3500
My 69 L48 car hasn't seen daylight since about 1992.
Do you think people would be freaking out if I got it out and started driving it around?
grovey Aug 29th, 06, 7:56 PM atleast for the first few miles while they were driving around all the junk that blew off the hood and roof lol. had to say it.

Mr69 Aug 29th, 06, 8:16 PM Here's a picture of a picture, circa 1989?

Well, there wouldn't be anything on the hood.
I might have to open the hood to check the oil before I fire it up.:clonk:

Absolutely, especially the guys who know you have it but think it is just going to sit forever.
I have a '69 that sat up for 16 years- until earlier this month. It needs a lot of work but still looks pretty good. The paint job (not the greatest when applied, but OK) was only about a year old when I parked it. I washed it, waxed it, got it running again, and now get the thumbs-up everywhere I drive it.
Back in "the day" '69s were all over the place, or they were where I gew up. They are almost gone now. Some people really appreciate the work and devotion it takes to keep one of them on the road, and they'll let you know it.
Mr69 Aug 29th, 06, 8:54 PM To be honest, I can't remember if the tags on it are 1990 or 1992.
They may be 1990.
She's got 193,000 on the original 300hp 350. (Technically a little less as I ran a low profile 245-60 tire for 7 years, from 139,000 when I bought it in 1985)
Heads/intake/oil pan have never been off.
Did a timing chain and upper gear around 1988 with around 163,000?
Has lots of lifter noise. I think the cam is flat. I had rebuilt the carb shortly before I parked it because under even mild acceleration it was starting to backfire out of the carb.
I think it would run and drive with a little tweaking.
joe58 Aug 29th, 06, 9:02 PM here's another one that has been sitting 20 years. It used to do pretty well at the drags as those are class winner decals in the window

BigsWick Aug 29th, 06, 9:07 PM Mine has 158,000 on it. Maybe it's 258,000, who knows. I'm the 3rd owner, it's on its 4th engine (one only saw track duty) and soon to be 4th transmission. I used to beat on it pretty hard back when I was still a street squirrel, but the car survived pretty well all things considered. I'm just thankful that I kept it all these years. Now I can hardly believe how lucky I am to get to drive it again.

I demand that you pick a good hot day, drag that out and give it a bath. If the paint shines at all, I want you to wax it too.
Then take a few pictures and put it back for safe keeping.
At least I moved mine a mile and a half about 4 years ago and gave it a dusting off while it was out. sheez:p
DFER Aug 30th, 06, 11:04 AM Guys:
This makes me realize I am not the only person keeping one and it being used as a dust collector. But I am in the process of changing transmissions (auto to 4 spd) and am going to get it running again this fall. I need to get off the backside and work on it more often.........

True, true, but those of us who got away from the hobby for a while, in my case a long while, slept a lot better at night knowing we still had the potential to get reinvolved one day.
I started checking prices a couple of years ago and was totally amazed at what I found. Decent Malibus for $8,000- $12,000? Super Sports easily for $25,000 plus?
Wow.....
chevelledude71 Aug 30th, 06, 4:29 PM I have to had it to you guys, letting your Chevelle's sit in the garage and not drive them...you are truly one of a kind. :)
When you leave your doors up, do you get people stopping everyday, asking you if you want to sell them?

I doubt they do.... Look at all the crap on top of them. I doubt you can tell what kind of cars they are.
Stikman33 Aug 30th, 06, 7:59 PM Mine has a little bit of dust on top, but that is what you get when swapping in a BBC :)

Dean Aug 30th, 06, 8:32 PM Mine aint got no top.
Can't leave the grage door open, people stop to look around at the garage sale.
Chris R Aug 31st, 06, 3:36 AM You should send those pics into Cars-In-Barns.
OrrieG Aug 31st, 06, 8:12 PM No, just keep it parked and your wife or kids can give it away when someone finds it in 2032 as a garage find. I got my car from a friend simply because it had started sitting like that in his garage and he wanted to get it into the hands of someone that would use and enjoy it.
Seriously, drag it out, clean it up and start driving it. Expect to replace rubber parts, possibly rebuild the wheel cylinders and a few seals may leak for a while. Replace the fluids. Then drive it on a regular basis and enjoy it.
hpsherlin Aug 31st, 06, 9:29 PM Mr69,
You show 8 cars in your signature line. Are all of them like this? It looks like another sitting beside the one with sheetrock on top or are these two projects? Hard to work on more than one project at a time. Any for sale to fix the others? Best of luck to you and the cars. Sorry, don't know anything about it but you opened the door. LOL
ssal396 Sep 1st, 06, 10:57 AM I have a neighbor that brought his Rustang home from his moms house after sitting for 12 years. I have to hand it to him, with very little car knowledge, he's got it running & completely restored the interior..
Now, he just needs to get the bugs worked out, & drive that sucker..
You should send those pics into Cars-In-Barns.
Heck, that aint nuthin.
I've got 6 muscle cars tucked in here.
oldtimebaseballfan Sep 3rd, 06, 10:55 AM Mr69,
Is that Monaco Orange?
This orange color was painted on the car around 1978-79.
It has always looked like the same color you see on the mid to late 70's Vettes and Chevy vans.
Not sure what color it is.
