Hi guys. I'm not much of a painter, work on mainly engine compartments, frames, chassis stuff, etc. etc. and do mostly rattle-can work. But I'd like to get a decent gun and start learning how to use it, so these jobs will come out better. Plus, MAYBE I'll eventually try my hand at "the bigger canvas ;) ". Anyway, a friend has a brand-new in the box DeVilbiss GTI620G (here's a link http://www.everhartsales.com/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=453056586 ) that he can't use, and said he'd give me for $150 - which I know is a great deal. Questions are: Can I use this to spray primer and/or basically any kind of paint? And would I be better off with something more low performance to learn on? Any words of wisdom are appreciated; as you can tell I don't know a darn thing about what I'm dealing with here :D . Oh, I do realize I need a decent compressor - that's no problem - Ram Air 2-stage 5hp 80 gallon; I think it puts out something like 17cfm @ 90psi. Thanks in advance.

That looks like a good gun at a great price, if you have the air to run it I would buy it. I have used the cheaper finish line gun and my car came out great, so I kind of like this brand of gun. But as a lot of people will tell you, its more the painter then the gun, study study, and do a lot of junk panels to get the feel for it then go on to the bigger stuff. Good Luck, Steve

That's a pretty nice gun to shoot primer with!
But I can't say anything, I use a Sata Jet gun for primer and color, but I only paint once or twice a year. Most any of the el cheapo guns are fine for primer, but, you need a little bigger tip than some of them come with. You end of sanding the primer back off so it will not be an issue if you get a little orange peel or whatever. I have a small touch up gun that's a gravity feed type that does great for some things.

When you get to a point where you're spraying a sealer on after the primer then you need the good gun since that coat will get the color coat and flaws there will show.

Thanks for the input, guys. I probably won't use it more than a few times a year, either. Sounds like I should go ahead and get it. Obviously, value-wise it's a great deal; I'm just hoping it makes sense for me as an all-around gun for paint AND primer, for a novice such as myself. Any other opinions? I'm all "eyes" :D .

I've had a LOT of experience with this gun. I've sprayed thick primers, expoxy, base coats, clear coats, as well as single stage paints with it. It sprays very well, and they're a great deal for the money. They come with 3 fluid tips ( 1.3, 1.4, 1.5) So you can spray a variety of products with it.
