Hey guys, las' weekend I started cleaning out the interior of my '69.
I was disapointed to see a headliner seam had split, 'an it was hanging down.
I flopped into the driver's seat to mess with it, looked up underneath... the underneath of my roof is rusting... talk about sick feeling in yer stomach.
Now, I've done my share of battle with body rust, but this being a big panel that ya wouldn't want to distort in any way, (assuming it's single panel?) I am open to suggestion...
Por 15? Rustmort? Sandblast(I know the answer to that!)Soft media blast?
With some other areas on the body in rusty shape, I've even considered having the thing dipped... which may open up other worm-cans...

TIA,

Russ

Pictures are always great in instances like this. Any rot through the roof? How bad is the rust, if it's just surface, then you already know the answer, wirewheel it get some POR-15 on it, some roof insulation of some sort and call it a day. Dip it?? well that depends on if it's availabel in your area and taking the body off the frame - if that's where your headed with the other hints of rust on the body then that's a good solution.

I've had tons of rust on the 66 SS that I'm restoring now. I had the rusty inside roof too. I removed headliner, then wire wheeled off the black insulation and surface rust. I POR-15'd everything then added Reflectix (from Home Depot) as an insulator on the inner roof. I think this should hold me..

Thanks fer the picks JJ, same delema.
It's not rotted through, but it's nasty.
I've never used por15, will it wick into seems, like on the bracing 'an bracketry?
And then, can you paint/insulate over the por?

POR-15 is kinda' thick, not sure how much wicking it'll do. It does run if you put it on too heavy though...
Yes, after the POR-15 is fully cured, you can paint over it.

Yep.

That rust started when it was brand new, inside the roofs were never primed very good at the factory and paint on the inside is none. Clean up the loose stuff and apply POR-this is the perfect application for this product and it should last another 37 years considering how well it's done so far with little to no protection. A cavity wax base spray like 3M's rustfighter, transtar's ambercoating, Amsoil's HD, or good old cosmoline works well for treating the seams. A good friend of mine swears by rustoleum primer thinned with WD-40 for treating seams but I would bet it could be a painter's nightmare. Bob
