I might have put my previous post in the wrong spot since I got very little response, so I will ask here.

I have a 68, I dont want a 68 colum, has anybody used any other vehicles steering colum in thier chevelles? Will any other year chevelle colum fit?

I believe some have used a mid 70s van column before. They still had the key on the dash like the 68s still had. Cars had the key on the column.

Otherwise you can get a Ididt or Flaming River column too.

The 1967 and 1968 General Motors steering columns were the first generation, energy absorbing types.

Before that time, the steering columns were all rigid and did not collapse or absorb energy in a frontal collision.

After that time frame, the steering columns were redesigned so that they not only collapsed and absorbed energy, they also locked the steering wheel. They also placed the ignition switch on top of the steering column down under the dash so as to make hot-wiring the car more difficult.

The only direct bolt-in steering columns for the 1968 Chevelle are other vintage steering columns for 1967 and 1968.

Can I ask a question? Why exactly do you want to replace your original column? Does it need rebuilding? Do you want to change to a tilt column?

I really am against changing the OEM original type 1967-68 energy absorbing steering column that was designed for your car and replacing it with a rigid type column that does not collapse.

I am not restoring the car, I am not using the stock wiring, nor the stock gauges nor the stock ignition.

I bought the car as a virtual rolling chassis and body so no dash seats interior parts or column came with it.

I would like a column with the ignition on colum as it is easier and I dont care for the keys to be on the dash dangling, even more so when I go to paint my dash and id like to prevent scuffs and such.

I agree on the colapsing column, so any column post 68 will be fine for me

Since you are basically building a street rod, with a unique dash, seats, etc, then you will need to custom fit a steering column. There are numerous GM steering columns starting in 1969 that have the lock cylinder and ignition switch as part of the steering column. You are probably best served by using a 1969 or later steering column and dash column mounting hardware from a GM A-car and/or G -car.
