: Customizing the engine well
hpsherlin Aug 24th, 06, 11:53 PM I couldn't stand to read another post or ask another question. Joined a little while ago!!! as a Member. I have decided to paint the underside of hood, firewall and inner fenders body color. The shop has taken everything off and testing to see if it is good...horns, relays, wiring harness, etc. The firewall will be torch red with the cowl tag cleaned and natural. I am trying to decide whether to paint the heater cover the red or gloss black for contrast. Horns, wiper motor, and some other bolt on will be gloss black. Haven't seen any to make up my mind. Being painted in next two days. Body is bc/cc. Under hood will be acrylic enamel with clear over. Any idea's? Have you seen them both ways? What do you think? Just want some input.
Glad to be a member! Wonderful site and bunch of chevellers.
I will do an intro about myself and the project later.

rubadub Aug 25th, 06, 1:41 AM You're asking, so I'll say no to the body color.
Two reasons, it makes me think an amateur worked on the car, and makes me think theres probably other stuff that was done to the car that is suspect.
The other reason, there might come a day that you will have to sell it, and this will probably hurt the value of it.
But, this is your car, and it will probably look pretty nice painting it the body color.
But, when you ask the question, it sounds like your doubting your self.
Don't take this the wrong way, it just constructive criticism.
Good luck, and wellcome to the site, post some pictures when it's done.

hpsherlin Aug 25th, 06, 9:50 AM Thanks rubadub,
But, painting the firewall and inner fenders body color is a done deal. I do not have the original motor. In my opinion, car can NEVER be original now so why not fix it the way chevy should have to begin with.
No doubting myself on that. Just looks much better than dull black IMHO.
Nothing cheap on this, have already spent $18,000 and still more to go.
RestoMod would probably be better way to describe.
I just want opinions on the heater box cover on the firewall.
Torch red like the rest of the firewall or Gloss black.
Thanks again,
I love my flag....

rubadub Aug 25th, 06, 10:15 AM Sounds like you have a really nice car, what about a slightly different shade of red instead of black on the heater box.
Rob
hpsherlin Aug 25th, 06, 7:46 PM Thought of that too. Used to be in the construction business on interiors of homes. Adage was that if the same color didn't match perfect than go with a contrasting color. A different shade would not be to my taste but thanks.
Any other opinions? and not on the inner fenders and firewall please.
Replacing any/all electrical items that are not up to snuff.
Surely someone has an opinion with the group of opinionated LOL chevelle owners on here.
Thanks
Herbie
obseSSed Aug 25th, 06, 7:53 PM What about chrome..chrome always looks good...Check out my engine bay in my sig. It is painted body color and has some chrome for contrast.
hpsherlin Aug 25th, 06, 8:12 PM Mike,
What can I say..........BEAUTIFUL engine bay. Something to think on. I appreciate it. Painting the engine bay on Monday. He will attach everything back next week and install the engine and tranny. I am getting excited.
obseSSed Aug 25th, 06, 8:21 PM Thanks Herbie, I painted my frame gloss black, the inner fenders, firewall and rad support all body color bc/cc and the engine I sprayed with a single stage enamel to match the body color. I also used a little powder coating, stainless fasteners, polished aluminum and a liberal amount of chrome for detail. I've since taken a couple of best engine awards :beers:
rubadub Aug 25th, 06, 9:18 PM Mike, that is a really nice looking engine compartment and engine, cross rams are my favorite setup.http://www.chevelles.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

hpsherlin Aug 25th, 06, 9:41 PM Mike,
Beautiful car also I forgot to mention.
I am using stainless fasteners also. Gonna go with gloss black on a lot of components. Chrome cleaner and valve covers. Original and anodized on others. Radiator support and radiator gloss.
littlehop Aug 25th, 06, 10:22 PM Herbie sounds like your cars going to be very nice,I think the red firewall and the gloss black heater box should look nice. Are you smoothing your firewall?I'm going through the same decision with mine. I'm doing a 67 chevelle also,I had my radiator support, heater box powdercoated black, and now my painter wants them to be painted to match the car too.
Its a member on here that has a 70 chevelle that he painted everything including the hood latch blue and I just love that car, check it out in the showroom section!

1972Custom Aug 25th, 06, 11:33 PM i would paint it all the same color. fire walls look good if it is not a stand out thing.. i wanted mine color matched. the painter on his own painted it black. he told me after he did it, and i think it looks dumb. just my opinion. jamie
