: Abandoned car update
atlantaboy Aug 22nd, 06, 8:56 AM Hello,
Last week I posted concerning how to recover an abandoned car. Well, turns out it isn't abandoned and is for sale. He just keeps it in the grocery store parking lot since his subdivision won't allow it there due to oil leaks, he claims.
It's a 64 Impala 4-door post. P/s, p/b, auto, a/c, 327 (I have not verified engine size). He claims it is all original except for the wheels (IROC) and exhaust and I'm inclined to believe it. It is white with brown interior. It has very thin surface rust on spots of most of the panels and it has rusted through in places on the rockers. All of the trim is there. He says it runs well, but I haven't verified.
He was asking 2500 and says he'll take 2000. Any Impala people here? I don't have money/space/time for another project, so I would probably clean it up, remove all the trash, and sell it. Is it worth the effort?
Thanks,
Danny
Dean Aug 22nd, 06, 9:47 AM So tell us how you went about finding out about it Danny.
atlantaboy Aug 22nd, 06, 11:14 AM Well, funny you should ask Dean. There were some papers on the seats, old bills and stuff. I found a phone number and just left a message "I'm trying to reach the owner..." I was all proud of myself and my detective work.
He called back and immedietely went into describing it and said he was asking $2500. I was a little confused and asked where all he was advertising it. He said "Nowhere, just the sign in the window that keeps falling down in the door." I was like "Oh sure..."
Evidently he's not getting a lot of calls on it so I have a little while to research and consider it.
Thanks,
Danny
Burbank SS Aug 22nd, 06, 1:45 PM Price sounds fantastic, $2,500 for a complete car. If it runs, even better.

For a 4 door Impala?
uhh well, maybe
Stewart G. Griffin Aug 23rd, 06, 1:44 AM If it runs, then i would jump on it immediately; Rappers/and that type of crowd love impalas of any year especially 63-96. You can clean it up, bondo it and give it a cheap yet effective paint job and probably profit 2-3 maybe 4 grand.
Chris R Aug 23rd, 06, 2:22 AM I would be willing to bet any good body shop could pull the roof back up into place and straighten it. I have seen much worse damage get fixed in the past but it still sucks to see your car in a position like that. Looks like it compressed down the suspension too.
droptop396 Aug 23rd, 06, 8:15 PM out of all the early to mid 60's impalas, the 1964 is one of the least popular.
it is a four door, YUCK!
Four doors cost the same to fix up, but are worth less.
$2500.00 is way too much!!!
Just because it is old, and is a chevy does not mean it is desirable or worth anything.
PASS!!
71elkySS454 Aug 23rd, 06, 8:41 PM I have to agree with droptop and Dean. 4 door is the key here. It is prolly worht more to part it out. $1,000 bucks tops. And if I bought it, I would NEVER consider putting any more money into it. Either flip it or part it out.
Stewart G. Griffin Aug 23rd, 06, 9:37 PM No seriously!! The rapper crowd likes 4 doors.
I would advise you to go for it.

Hey Chris...... I think you wanted to post that in this thread http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=141577
Burbank SS Aug 24th, 06, 2:57 AM You guys ragging on it because its a 64 and a 4 door, I don't see where you get that. 64s are very popular, and from what I see (even with Chevelles) 4 doors (even post) are not shunned.
I see 4 door post 64 Impalas in the local Auto Trader type papers for pretty good bucks around here, and I'm not talking cusom or show restorations.
Not everyone can afford or find an SS. $2000 for a running car is pretty good.
Chris R Aug 24th, 06, 2:57 AM Well now thats odd. Your right and I have no idea how I posted that while in this thread. I dont remember looking at this thread in the first place. oh well, what can ya do.
atlantaboy Aug 24th, 06, 8:40 AM From a little research, it is priced close to what it's worth. It would be possible to make a little money with some cleaning and tuning, but probably not an incredible amount. Due to limited time and space, I'm probably going to pass on it for now.
Thanks for the comments,
Danny

That's just not true, maybe one half of 1% of enthusiests like them, to the rest they are parts cars.

Glad you like them, you can have um' all.
I wouldn't give more than a couple of hundred bucks for one myself.
PaPa Johns 77 Aug 24th, 06, 10:41 AM You do have to admit that there are more and more 4 door chevelles, impalas and other popular 60s' body styles showing up. Mostly due to the high prices the 2 doors bring and the growing lack of availability of the 2 doors. It is a way of semi realizing a dream of owning one of these popular years that many remember. Yes, they are not the prized muscle car they want but as close as many will ever get. I have built a couple in the past and they can be rather impressive. Especially when you see people walk by the SS and to look over the 4 door and say wow we had this car when I was a kid! And it does happen!:D
Burbank SS Aug 24th, 06, 3:15 PM That's my point PaPa Johns 77. Dean, I like my 2 door Chevelle, but my contemporary cars are 4 doors. If I were looking for a Chevelle I'd look at 2 doors, but I already have one, what about some kid just starting out? Maybe he can't afford an SS.
Dean Aug 24th, 06, 3:23 PM OK OK, so maybe one half of 1% MIGHT be interested, I'm just not in that group myself.
Supply and demand sets the "worth"
atlantaboy Aug 24th, 06, 3:49 PM I agree with both of you.
Although I have a 2dr Chevelle and I'm probably not going to buy the Impala, there is still a difference.
A Chevelle is a muscle car, two extra doors hurt the appeal for many.
An Impala is for (general perception) cruising, often with several friends. So for a lot of people the extra doors are not an issue. Especially when they are cheaper. Also, it's lines aren't really hurt or broken up by 4 doors like a Chevelle.
I would be much more likely to buy a 4dr Impala for my personal use than I would a 4dr Chevelle.
Danny
dreis454 Aug 24th, 06, 3:57 PM Gotta agree with Dean on this one.
Burbank SS Aug 25th, 06, 2:53 AM Lets agree to disagree. But you have to agree its a matter of personal preference. Sure the 4 door post Impala is worth a lot less than a hardtop and a coupe. To say only 0.5% of classic car enthuthists would be interested is a bit of an exaggeration IMHO.
Andy69 Aug 25th, 06, 8:20 AM Personally I don't like 4-doors, because when I got into cars, 4-doors where shunned in all cases. I tell ya though I see a lot of 4 doors around here, and some of them are done quite nicely. It's the new generation of kids doing it too, and they have gotten into cars when I think there is a different attitude about 4-door cars. It probably has everything to do with price and availability of the 2-door cars.
Dean Aug 25th, 06, 12:13 PM Just to clairify;
I was speaking of a 4 door Impala only
I turned down a couple of real good deals on 4 door Chevelles before, now I wish I had bought them.
Stewart G. Griffin Aug 25th, 06, 9:49 PM Some of you need to watch MTV2 more often; The "gangstaz" love anything 4 doors and chevy----even the FWD models.
I'm telling you, profit can be made with this find if done right.
Burbank SS Aug 26th, 06, 2:37 AM My preference in a 4 door would be the hardtop, but this could be a real nice car. Even if it isn't "pimped" (or gangstar'ed or hip-hoped or whatever) it could be a real fun sleeper.

You would have better luck at a casino, than making $$$$ off a 4-door.
It's not a sure thing and you dont want to get stuck with a car nobody likes.
Four doors are still cheap and are not popular. I have seen the same low mileage original 4 door 65 chevelle for sale two years in a row.
super nice car low price, and still nobody wants it.
Burbank SS Aug 26th, 06, 9:34 PM Bring it to Los Angeles, it will sell.
Junkyard Dawg Aug 27th, 06, 3:07 AM I think the ever increasingly prices of the 2 doors are starting to drive up the prices of 4 doors.
But the truth stands that 4 doors are not as popular as 2 doors. But 4 doors are starting to become favorable for more than parts cars now that 2 doors are getting more expensive.
Who ever thought way back that one day 4 door Malibu station wagons, Impala station wagons and Chevy II station wagons would one day be favorable? And yet at one time (and probably still happens to this day) they were used as demolition derby cars!
BigFred66 Aug 27th, 06, 12:39 PM ....imagine a '64 Impala 4 dr. with 22's.......metalflake paint and a leopard skin vinyl roof!!
BigFred66 Aug 27th, 06, 12:41 PM ....there's a couple of '77-'90 Caprice/Impalas that fall into this category in this area......
droptop396 Aug 27th, 06, 1:08 PM Here are a few ebay 64 impala 4 door cars.
from the looks of the auctions, I would go with my original answer.
These cars are not popular and are not worth your time or money.
The last auction probably won't even get a single bid. too high of a starting price, nobody is going to pay that much for a four door 6 cylinder impala.
